Zombie Cliche Lookout: Non-Renewable Resources

When it comes to zombie survival, careful management of resources is essential. As with anything, some resources are more valuable than other, and those are often things that are finite in nature. Naturally, the easiest example of this is time. You can’t go down to the clock farm and take in a fresh harvest of minutes and hours. You get the same twenty-four hours in your day as everyone else, and using them wisely is incredibly important.

There is, however, a bit of a cheat you can employ with time. If you have some trustworthy allies, you might be able to use them to give yourself more time to accomplish specific tasks. They aren’t making more time, but they’re giving you the ability to focus on something you wouldn’t have otherwise. Generally speaking, that means distracting people, zombies, or both until something pivotal can happen.

About this Episode:

We don’t get a lot of time with Jess and Bill, so I can’t really develop them too much. I am trying to give them a bit of personality in their dialog, however. Bill seems straight to the point, bordering on taciturn. Jess, on the other hand, seems much more verbose. What does this tell us about these characters? Not a ton, but every little bit helps.

Discussion Question: Operation Distraction

Put yourself in Murphy and Russell’s shoes. You have to go in and talk to this big biker. He is, according to reports, a pretty nasty guy. And he’s got a lot of backup. What sorts of things could you do to get him to let his guard down and relax for a bit? How would you engage him in conversation? After all, it might be a challenge just getting him to start talking. He might slam the door in your face. Hell, he might rob you first.

  1. Typo alert: “some resources are more valuable than other,” other–> others 😀

Only one for today, good going, Dave! 😀

  2. I’m not sure if it would be any less believable than anything they could come up with, but how about the truth? Nobody believes that anymore, right? So just tell him the truth and watch him go ham on some new subjects! 😀

  3. Also Jess’s line in panel 4 is another typo: “time TO get” is what should be there! 😀

    • Right you are. I uploaded a revised version. Let me know if it disappears again.

      • This one seems a bit better behaved. So far it hasn’t disappeared! *crosses fingers behind back*

  4. Regarding this lack of personality, just reuse some frames and extend the dialog a few more weeks! I don’t mind at all! 😀

  5. Also, is Murphy going to call this as a double-cross or what? It would be suspiciously like a way to off a relatively small group or break them apart without destroying their own group, and test their own group’s real integrity. In other words, this has been a set-up all along and Murphy and Russell are just the pawns in a larger scheme! 😀

    • My feelings exactly, it’s a trap!

  6. Reverse it. Don’t go and meet him, why would anyone go and meet this guy. Set up in a place you know he is going to be and wait for him to come to you. The broken down vehicle on the road to where Gus is going to pick up his tribute from the new group is the most obvious. Then while Gus is giving the his whole speech on what they have to do to live take Gus out.

Personally I would do it the other way around. Let Gus come to the new group’s home to get his tribute and have our heroes be the one to take him out. He would feel safe seeing the entire new group and not realize there was another group ready to take him out.

    • Well, Gus is already in a safe location, what makes you think he’s going to leave there anytime soon? if he’s a wise leader, he’s obviously not going to go anywhere without a large armed and heavily defended escort. 😀

      • Already stated he shows up regularly, in person with an ever shifting group. Choosing your ground to fight is the key to victory. Going into his territory gives that advantage away.

  7. It looks like Dave either got ensnared in work or decided to take the traditional Easter vacation break, but forgot to tell us about it! 😀 Anyway, I don’t think he’ll be replying to comments until Tuesday! 😀

    • Work, as always.

      • While you’re here, don’t forget to respond to the rest of the comments! 😀
