Zombie Cliche Lookout: No Clean Getaways
When it’s time to sneak away from a horde of zombies, things rarely go easily for characters in fiction. After all, if they did, it really wouldn’t be much of a story, would it? No matter how careful and deliberate they are about killing or drawing away all the zombies, there’s always at least one that somehow slips through the cracks. And, almost without fail, that zed is going to show up just as the most vulnerable character is making their escape. Or, if not the most vulnerable, then perhaps the fan favorite. Either way, it’s a cheap and easy way to ratchet up the tension just a bit.
About this Episode:
Taking a week off can be tough for me, because I tend to forget about things. For instance, in this case I completely forgot that I had done a transitional episode to move the clock forward so these next few strips take place at night. So I shot and edited the episode, and then realized my mistake when I went to upload it to the site. Oops. Good thing adding a low light effect is relatively easy.
Discussion Question: Fan Favorites
Writing the zombie cliche lookout above made me think: which character in Bricks of the Dead would be the fan favorite? Would there, in fact, even be a fan favorite?
I’m going to start off by offering up two guesses: Murphy, and Sam. Murphy because he’s the most traditionally heroic character in the series, and is kind of a badass. Sam because he’s my personal favorite, and thus has probably ended up getting a bit more development that his costars.
Naturally, I’m not including Scrimshaw and similar non-canon characters here. Because everyone loves Scrimshaw, so it wouldn’t be a far fight.
Typo alerts: “And, almost without fail, that zeds is going” zeds–>zed 😀
“it’s a cheap as easy way” as–>and 😉
“Murphy, and Sam. Murphy because it’s the most traditionally heroic character in the series, and it kind of a badass.” Change instances of “it” and “it’s” to “he’s”, we’re talking about Murphy here. Plus it fixes a typo for the second “it”.
Fixed all. I don’t know what happened with that Sam/Murphy paragraph. Dang.
If it wasn’t for the fact that you excluded non-canon characters, I’d suggest Dave. Why? Because as the author of this website, he’s practically unkillable, rarely shows up and never helps anyone in the story, he did in the Second String, but that’s non-canon anyway! 😉
Hah, that’s a very good point.
So, what? Death to Dave?…
…gonna be hard to get updates after that… 😉
Very hard.
I expect Dave’s zombie will have words with him after that incident! 😀
As for the comic itself, I wonder how many other zeds didn’t go after the truck for long enough? I sure hope Ted had a pair of two-way radios or that Barb has some inkling of how to use a two-way radio, as a lot of the larger delivery companies often have one, or it gets bundled with refurbished vans.
Also, wouldn’t it have been wiser to equip the kids with weapons? Even if they’re kids, surely they should have been taught some basic survival training for these zeds.
These are pretty young kids. I imagine the adults feel they’d be more of a threat to themselves armed than to the zombies.
Well so far I guess that’s the women of the comic are the most interesting characters. Of course Sam has more depth so far, but in real time action, Barb and Cheryl look bad ass as hell.
Hah, that they are!
Actually most of my favorite characters have already bit the dust (or rather got bit) like the one guy in the tv station who sacrificed himself to save the others and using a chain saw against the horde.
I do have to admit though, the site really needs an archive page xD Im reading through the comic and just realized that I dont remember why the father is not with his family in this shot…but I dont really want to backtrack through 20 pages to find out.
Perhaps there is an archive page but I just missed it? O.o
Ha! Episode 609! Found it!
And there is an archive…of sorts, it would have been easier if I remembered Teds name x.x
There isn’t an archive page. When I redesigned the site the old one stopped working. I’m in the process of building a new one out.
But yes, you should be able to use the character tabs to an extent.
I think Clark could become a fan favorite. (He’s always been a favorite of mine.)
He’s kind of an ass, but asses are the Best! 😉
He also seems pretty capable, when it comes to taking out the zombies.
He killed one with an effing spear! If that’s not awesome, then I don’t know what is. 🙂
Gene was also one of my favs.
And Ted.
And Brent.
Haha! And you’re killing them all!
Dammit! You better not kill of Clark!
I also like Sam a lot. Thankfully, I dont think you’re going to kill him off anytime soon.
Also, Inez is very interesting. I can’t wait to see what happens next, with her.
Maybe Russell could become a fav. If he got a little more focus.
Do you have anything big planned for him, anytime soon?
You do seem to like the jerk characters. I would include Russel and Inez in that count.
Has to be Barb. She really stepped up when it came time to escape the house.
That she did. She’s an all-around hardass.
I would like for all of these characters from the separate storylines to meet up with each other. Well, those you don’t kill off first, that is! 😀
