Zombie Cliche Lookout: Zombie Survival Fashion

When we think about zombie survival, we probably think about weapons, hideouts, food storage, and first aid. But there’s another big aspect that generally doesn’t get as much attention: what we wear. We would need to balance comfort, ease of movement, appropriateness for weather and temperature, and some measure of protection. That last one has a lot of variance to it. Protection could be thick leather to protect from bites, or it could simply mean that it doesn’t give the zeds anything to grab onto. Finding that balance is the tricky part.

About this Episode:

You may notice that Barb’s new outfit is from a male minifig. This is not ideal, but most of the casual/athletic gear I have for women is really loud and impractical. This is a compromise.

Other News:

I posted a blog about this the other day, but I want to make sure everyone sees it. We’re running a book giveaway for what sounds like a pretty cool zombie survival book: Seven Days Dead. How do you enter? Easy: simply go to the blog page and post a comment. I’m going to give it a couple of weeks, and then select ten random winners from the commenters.

That said, we’ve got one more episode of Bricks of the Dead before I take a little break for the holidays. But don’t worry, I’ve got a great short guest strip series that I’ll be posting while I’m off. I won’t spoil anything about it, but I’m confident everyone will enjoy it.

Discussion Question: Hair and Zombies

Sticking with our fashion theme, what do you think would be the ideal haircut for a zombie survival situation? Obviously you want something simple, easy to maintain, and hard for zombies to grab, but let’s also assume that we want to look good. I know I want to look good.

  1. In terms of pure practicality, a butch cut (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butch_cut) or completely shaved head is probably the best option.

However, if you still want to keep a bit more hair on your head, then a crew cut (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crew_cut#/media/File:Jesse_Metcalfe.jpg) should do nicely.

    • Both would be very practical, although not everyone call pull them off. That said, aesthetics is probably a secondary concern at best.

  2. That’s … a really nice outfit! 😀 i wonder if Vicky knows whether Ted would mind giving some of his pre-loved clothing away, too, posthumously, I mean? 😉

    • I like to think he’d be okay with it.

  3. Speaking of the guest comics, Dave, could you take some extra time out sometime, and add in links that enable people browsing the archives to skip over the guest comics? There are quite a few on your site now, and it’s kind of hard navigating around to particular episodes of BotD otherwise! 😀

    • This would include the return of the Archives page, as it seems to have gone missing. You really need to look into a site management add-on that lets you quickly catalog the pages in the comic for you, and reorder them into a format more suitable for archive delving and binging. 😀

      • Both items are in my backlog for when I get some spare time. I know it’s a pain in the ass, please be patient. I don’t have nearly as much time as I would like to work on the comic and the website these days.

        • Patience doesn’t seem to be getting the work done for your comic. These items get put off more and more from my perspective, and all the patience in the world will mean little if your problem grows ever bigger. 😉

What I’m trying to say is that you need to fit the comic revamp of the links and the Archives in now, instead of putting it off all the time, as it’s essential maintenance.

Every time I see you putting it off it frustrates me, as I have to deal with this old system which isn’t working well at all for me. You have no idea how unamusing it is trying to randomly hit around the comic number through the “random” link.

If this means you have to take time out from producing BotD, so be it, like I wrote above, this is essential, and the sooner you get around to moving it up your backlog, the better, doesn’t matter if it’s now or after Christmas holidays, please just get it done soonest. 😀

        • Trust me, I get it. The trouble is that I actually need to figure out how to make it work (the last couple of things I tried didn’t work right), which is going to take some time. Time is tough to come by for me right now, but I’m trying.

  4. I know the joke is old at this point but if you speak of Zombie survival outfit… I have to mention the good old chicken suit.

Totally inconspicuous, the chicken suit is the perfect choice as it offers natural concealment from the zombies (it is a well known fact that zombies have no taste for chicken). The padded fabric will also provide warmth and protection to its wearer.
Unlike zombies, everyone loves chickens and seeing people wear these costumes is guaranteed to relieve some of the tension the apocalypse is bound to generate.
    Don’t wait, get yours today!

    • I guess under the chicken mask/hat, your hair style doesn’t really matter.

      • … aaand now I realize today’s question was about the haircut – not the outfit.
Well, as you point out, with this sort of outfit the hairdo does not really matter.. another bonus!

        • Meh, close enough.

    • Greg, you are my new hero :3

The only danger is that you may randomly be attacked by hungry foxes o.o

We need a comic Dave, someone trying to escape the z invasion in a chicken suit or a banana costume.

      This must happen! D:

      • Luckily, I have both of those collectible minifigs.

        • Serious? They make chicken and bannana man suit minifigs???
