Zombie Cliche Lookout: Dancing Around the Showdown
Today’s trope only shows up in zombie stories when real human enemies show up. After all, zombies don’t exactly have the wit to verbally snipe at their potential victims. But once humans, “the real monsters”, show up, things tend to get a little more like an action movie. And one of the most fun parts about action movies are the way the hero and villain banter as they lead up to the inevitable showdown at the end of the film. Look no further than more recent seasons of The Walking Dead for the various interactions between Rick, Negan, Coral, and that guy with the Mustache (I assume this is still a thing; I gave up on the show a while ago).
About this Episode:
So Murphy is doing one of those things that kids seem to love: lying by omission. Rather than just denying things, he’s phrasing things in such a way to let Bill believe what he already assumes to be true. Now, in this case, I’m not sure if that’s really necessary. Bill has shown himself to already be hostile. It’s obvious they weren’t coming to backup Murphy and Russell, so why should Murphy keep up the lie? Well, it’s just something you do in these kinds of stories. Go with it.
Discussion Question: Killing Off Characters?
Today’s question comes from our old pal BrickVoid, who asks “Should Dave actually kill off any of the characters or just settle for wounding them?”
This is definitely an interesting question as we approach the ending of the comic. These characters have made it this far, so does that mean they are safe? Or safe-ish, since they can still be wounded? Of course, I have the ending already scripted out, so I’m not likely to change anything.
I think Murphy is brilliant by implying something along these lines: “So let’s see now, Gus shot at us and killed Russell, and took potshots at me, are you sure this guy wants supplies, or does he just want targets to practice live fire on?” 😀
Yes indeed. Let Bill and the others read between the lines as they will.
I can’t find any typos to report, good job, Dave! As always, if anyone spots one, please do post about it! 😀
That’s shocking, actually. I wrote this while my wife was watching the royal wedding highlights in the background and making frequent comments about it. I wasn’t exactly at my most focused.
Well, you were focused enough to not make any typos. I didn’t tune into the royal wedding myself, so how was it? Like Prince Charles’s wedding to Diana, I assume? She may have died tragically but her wedding is one of the few I did see on TV. 😀
I don’t know if you know who to message about it, but the BCN banner and drop-down box is sometimes slow to load on your page. Been noticing it on and off of late, so if you know who to drop a message to please do! 😀
Hah! NOW the typo appears! Murphy’s last word balloon has “the the” in it! 😀
Well shit. I’ve got it fixed. Let me know if it reverts.
I’ve no idea how long that was there for. But I looked at it when I posted that comment, and I’d speculate it had been there since the episode published, until you fixed it whenever you fixed it. 😀
I’m like, wtf, a typo in the comic? 😀
Oh yeah, it was there the whole time. Not the first time, although hopefully it’ll be the last.
