Zombie Cliche Lookout: Jumpy
If you want to survive a zombie outbreak, you’re going to have to be on your toes. The people that don’t take things seriously and aren’t constantly alert are going to be among the first to end up as a fresh meal for the zeds. Of course, that level of alertness is pretty tough to maintain, especially on your own. It’s exhausting, and the longer you have to maintain it, the more apt you are to screw things up. Taking the edge off with alcohol probably isn’t the best idea either.
About this Episode:
So apparently I neglected to do a write-up for this episode. That’s a little embarrassing. But you know what they say: better late than never.
So today we’re finally getting to meet Gus. This is a character I’ve had in reserve for, literally, years. Before Bricks of the Dead had it’s own website, Gus was going to be the next character that got introduced. The only problem was, I couldn’t quite decide how he was going to work. Originally, he was going to be a villain. Then, a good guy. Then a character that initially appeared to be a villain, and was gradually revealed to be a good guy.
Quite a lot has changed since my original rough notes and outline for the comic. As we’re drawing the story to a close, I’ll probably touch on a couple others.
Discussion Question: Drinking
When I think of biker cliches, I think of hard living, hard drinking people. Introducing Gus without a bottle of his favorite booze seemed, well, it just seemed wrong. Of course, as I mentioned above, alcohol and zombie preparedness probably don’t mix entirely well, but you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do. Building on that theme, what would be your one alcoholic drink you’d bring along with you as you fled the crumbling remains of civilization amidst the zombie apocalypse?
Well, this episode looks pretty good, there’s only one thing missing: Where’s the write-up? 😀
No typos to report – yet! 😀
Oh man. That’s embarrassing. I’ll get this posted ASAP.
Also, I’m wondering why this episode is called “Stand down” when it’s more of a “Stand off” kind of episode! 😀
Hah; Gus and Murphy are telling each other to stand down before they have a stand off.
As for Gus, yeah, okay, after actually seeing the guy, he’s one of the good guys. No two ways about it, although we’ll see what he makes of what Murphy an d Russell tell him, if he doesn’t get shot at first! 😀
Hah, glad to see the character looks as he’s supposed to.
In a barrel the guys on one of my ships put yeast, sugar, hot water, and a lot of fruit. The smell was turpentine and I think the mix could’ve fueled disel rigs.
So I think another survivor cliche would be making / drinking “rot gut” hooch. Making the official flavored drinks “Hooch of the day”, while the official drink would be clear clean water.
What do you do for a living? Because it sounds like you’ve got a hell of an interesting job.
In my youngest years I was an eagle scout, and I worked for a “local” wal-mart, but that didn’t last long, someone tried to kill me and that didn’t help get me a job that was good. mostly ended up has a gas station worker, or janitor for one place or another, but then I got fed up and went with some friends under the “unbreakable” friends recruited together, stay together buddy system clause in the Navy. Needless to say, it was immediately broken and I ended up in VA on a gator (nickname of a type of ship), then after a divorce I ended up still in VA, but on a Carrier (nicknamed the bird cage). Then due to an undiscovered at the time medical condition I was forced to retire into a dead-ended retail job that didn’t pay enough to keep my VA house. Then I had to move back to my folks and I tried my had at college and finishing a degree. Next I moved out of my folks house, started working for a local library has the early morning janitor again. Finally got hired and fired from a gun making place for reasons.
Thankfully I still work at the library.
*It wasn’t the job, because being in the navy is just a being a higher paid janitor and/or grease monkey. It was the amazing and not so amazing people that made me tough out through my days.*
BTW: thank you for the smiles and laughs through this comic’s run.
on the Ships in the Navy I was Machinist Mate, sorry forgot to tell you the title!
Wow, you’ve had quite the experiences. Where were you in VA? My sister was in the Navy for a bit stationed in Norfolk.
Oh, just a few. Lately it has been construction.
I’ve met only a few ladies that could stand (or needed to be around) muscle-headed machinist mates, so I could not say I’ve had the pleasure of meeting her at Norfolk.
Typo alerts: “longer your have the maintain it” the–>to 😀
“more apt you are you screw things up” 2nd “you”–>to 😀
Wow, you’re getting your “to’s” mixed up there, Dave! 😀
Fixed. I also corrected the “your” that should be a “you”.
I legitimately didn’t see that one when I wrote it up, you’re getting better at finding and fixing your own typos! 😀 Keep practicing, you’ll eventually find that your mind will start calling attention to the typos as you write them, well, at least it does that for me. 😀
You know, I think I’m not sure anymore if I should trust Gus. I just realized which minifig head Dave used for this guy! Yep, it’s Dave’s very own minifig head that he uses on his webcomic author whenever it’s in the comic, it’s also on his name on all of his comments! 😀
Gus is Dave, in disguise, of course. I don’t think anyone can shoot him now, nor can any zombie bite him, that would just ruin their day! 😀 I’d also bet the zombies know exactly who he is! 😀
Hah. Mine is slightly different.
You’re not fooling me that easily, part of the disguise is the side of the beard, we’re not meant to know it’s you, but I reckon it’s a close enough fit! 😀
