Zombie Cliche Lookout: Dressing for the Job

One of the things I really love about the zombie genre is the way that it takes very normal people, puts then in terrible circumstances, and forces them to deal with things with only what they happen to have available. Sure, a person might be a survival and firearms enthusiast capable of dealing with practically anything thanks to all the preparations they’ve made. Unfortunately for them, the zombie apocalypse happens to strike when they’re on vacation and stuck with only the light vacation clothes they happen to have with them.

It has a way of shaking things up and challenging expectations. People who should be more prepared, like the police and military, are often taken out right at the beginning because they’re also first responders and don’t have the time or ability to adapt. That means the characters who remain are just ordinary folk with diverse skills and experiences, many of which are not even remotely applicable to surviving the zombie apocalypse.

About this Episode:

I think it’s a lot of fun to play with and experiment with minifig placement when I shoot comics. Most of the comics in the series are dialog focused, and as such vacillate between the two or more characters speaking. That doesn’t generally give me a lot to work with for placement, but sometimes, I get to put someone up on a bed for absolutely no reason.

Discussion Question: Survival Clothing

As Clark mentions above, Barb’s all white outfit might not be the best things for a zombie survival scenario. This isn’t to say that zombies are drawn to bright colors, or high contrast, simply that white tends to stand out. That being said, what sort of clothing would you want to be wearing if you had to survive a zombie outbreak?

  1. Survival and firearms enthusiast don’t go on vacation… You know, just in case…

    • Hah!

  2. On a personal note I love taking care minifigs placement in my own comic… Most of the time it’s a real pain in the a** using Lego Degital Designer for this, but in the same time I’m having a lot of fun.

About the closing I’d like to wear. I think I’ll go standard here, pair of jeans, high hiking shoes, and depending of the season a warm hoodie or a long sleeved checked shirt.

Oh and a cap! Mariners or Seahawks… Definitely a cap!

    • Mariners or Seahawks? Are they popular in France?

      • Nope… I guess that’s just me LOL.

  3. There’s a cintinuity error now: Suddenly, the floor has changed to a tan background! 😀 Boy those magical carpet layers are goddam fast, so fast Dave didn’t even comment on it! 😀

    • *continuity

As an aside, there don’t appear to be any typos for today! 😉 Which is just as well, I got to BotD late because I got distracted by an old game I’m revisiting, and forgot to check in on this site! 😀

      • Nice!

        What old game?

        • Total Annihilation, although the game is a bit buggy in places it’s extremely playable! 😀

        • I know of it, but I haven’t played it myself.

    • Believe it or not, that’s not a continuity error. The carpet in the bedroom is tan, and in the hallway it’s blue. These people are master interior decorators, let me tell you.

      • Hah, there’s nothing better than live commentary, is there? 😉

Unless Dave wants to start a chatroom for BotD, that is! 😀

        • Oh man, the forum didn’t work out too well, I can’t imagine a chatroom.

        • Would be awesome though… Even considering we kinda cover all timelines LOL

        • Forum? Why is it I vaguely remember you trying that? I probably didn’t visit it due to time constraints, sorry about that! 😀

        • It’s all your fault!

Hah, we just didn’t have a big enough community. It was a fun idea, just not quite sustainable.

  4. I also just now noticed something: Dave must be using different sets for the bedrooms and hallways between them. This could actually work in his favor: Hallways are often given a different color of carpet, intentionally, to differentiate them and to set off the rooms they lead to. So Dave could totally just use that as an excuse for the blue carpet in the previous strip and I wouldn’t even care! 😉

    • Well said, BV. See? It’s an actual decorating thing, not just me running out of like-colored baseplates.

      • Since it was you who originally had the problem with the blue baseplate (see previous episode for your own commentary on that) I now think you’re running out of like-colored baseplates! 😀 (j/k)

You are really are a lot better at doing these sets than you think, they are excellent and do turn out to be what you want them to be, in the end! 😀

I’d definitely recommend you keep the blue baseplate for the hallway, to avoid potential problems with your continuity expert! 😉

        • Oh I’m definitely keeping the blue in the hallway.

        • The one thing that keeps me coming back to these comments is that minifig head used for your avatar: It’s perfect, and since it never changes, always gives you that same look, no matter what you type! So I tend to use tongue in cheek responses most of the time! 😉

        • I actually need to change it. I’ve been wearing glasses and have had a full beard for a couple years now.

        • LOL, okay! But you need to find a minifig head that’s got the same expression on it with the new features! That might take some browsing in the BL catalog!

        • I was wainting for the full beard avatar since you posted a photo of you after some kind of sport/running event (earlier this year or last year if I’m correct). Now I’m really looking forward to the switch!

        • Oh yeah, I forgot I posted that. It was after Tough Mudder (10-12 mile obstacle course challenge). I’m planning to do it again this year, although I’m planning to be in better shape this time around.

I need to get a couple of those big beard pieces. I’ve haven’t bought any LEGO in a fair bit, other than the one big modular set each year.

        • Scrimshaw’s, but it’s white…

        • Yeah, I need a brown one. At least for now; I’m sure in a couple of years I’ll be able to switch to Scrimshaw’s.
