Zombie Cliche Lookout: Luck and Survival

People love making zombie apocalypse survival plans, and who can blame them? After all, it’s a ton of fun. But when we’re imagining things, we’re usually giving ourselves an abundance of resources that we will likely not have in reality (the reality with zombies in it… shut up). Odds are, we won’t be nearly as fortunate as we imagine ourselves to be, which will almost certainly result with us getting killed. At the the end of the day, we have to admit that luck plays a big role in survival. Maybe the biggest role, although having a positive attitude certainly doesn’t hurt.

The problem with luck, however, is that it’s fickle. Luck always changes, and it can leave you hanging just when you need it the most. Hope for luck, but plan for the worst.

About this Episode:

One of the reasons I made the previous episode double-length was to make room for this exchange. Cheryl’s lines just popped into my head when I was scripting the comic, and I really wanted to use it, but I didn’t want to push back the episodes I had planned to make room. Double-length episode to the rescue!

Discussion Question: Unconventional Zombie Slaughter

Here’s a fun one from BrickVoid: What’s the most unconventional way you’ve come across of killing hordes of zombies, be it in books, movies, or other fictional zombie works?

Most people kill zombies in the conventional manner, or with a stumbling start until someone figures out what stops the zombies from being roaming undead. But how inventive have fiction writers and movie directors been in killing off masses of zombies?

Would you like to see more ways of killing zombies, or is it that once you’ve seen one means of dispatching the zombies that you’ve suddenly seen them all?

  1. Are you planning a “Zed kill of the Day” series? Otherwise I say keep it with the story line and an interesting kill when it comes up in the story.

    • No, nothing like that. Just a fun discussion question. Although if I see an opportunity to take out some zeds in interesting ways, I’m probably not going to pass it up.

      • Yeah, a zed on the edge of a busy highway having spotted something it could eat on the other side would probably just be killed since it doesn’t care about traffic or getting run over! 😀

        • Zombie frogger!

  2. The vibe of this episode reminded me of the following:

“That which does not kill me makes me stronger. That which does kill me makes my mother stronger.” -old Russian Army saying

    • Man, those Russians…

  3. Cheryl makes an interesting observation, luck probably plays a big factor in zombie survival scenarios, but other factors would probably weigh heavily on the odds of someone surviving. I reckon acting like an idiot and just asking to be bitten will drastically shorten your chances of survival, for sure! 😀

    • You’re not wrong. I think there’s definitely a core level of competency you need to get by. After that, luck probably plays an important role.

  4. And how about zombies you can’t kill at all… That’s more the way I’m tending towards in my own comic. I guess it has already been used before. I like this idea… They are already dead after all…

    • That just makes me wonder about what lengths someone might go to get rid of them. Unkillable zombies tend to attract deadly endings that seem to kill not just the zombies but sometimes vaporizes an entire planet! 😉

      • I’ve my idea on that… but it’s a secret 😉

        • That was a big part of the plot of Return of the Living Dead. The only way to kill them was to completely destroy them, usually by burning. The problem being that the ash from the fire could bring back other bodies, and you were right back where you started.

  5. Dave, is it two episodes a week, or three? 😀

I’m fine with two, FWIW! 😉
