Zombie Cliche Lookout: Death Sentence

One of the more horrifying aspects of zombies as a monster is that all it takes is one bite – and sometimes even just a scratch – to ensure that you will soon die and reanimate as one of them. Like the saying goes: the good guys have to win every single time; the zombie only have to land a bite once.

The troubling thing is, people often manage to kill the zombie who bit them, get rescued, or somehow get away. They are spared the horror of being eaten alive, but have to live with the fact that they are going to die very soon. And if none of their friends takes the necessary steps, they’ll reanimate and be just another zombie.

About this Episode:

Good lord, this little fracas between Clark, Ted, Barb and all those zombies sure did make a mess. There are bodies all over, boards just littered here and there, tools, and the bookcase is totally out of plumb. It’s a disgrace is what it is.

Of course, as some of you fine commenters have pointed out, I’m missing some of the finer points of the mess. There are no shell casings scattered about, nor are the bullet holes in all the walls. And, hey, what about all the wayward brains, skull fragments, and other gore and viscera? LEGO needs to start manufacturing some of these items.

Discussion Question: What’s Worse?

All other things being equal, which would be worse: getting eaten alive by a hoard of zombies, or escaping with a bite? On the one hand, the pain would be horrific, but fairly short lived. On the other hand, you have time to say goodbye, but if you die without someone destroying your brain, you will become a zombie and potentially put others at risk.

  1. I think Barb underestimates just how quickly Ted could turn into a zombie. There really isn’t time for him to say goodbye to his family, not when he might turn into one of the very monsters he’s trying to protect them from, and I hope Clark has the good sense to end the possibility long before it becomes a threat to the group’s safety as a whole. Why? Because they have no idea just how quickly someone could reanimate as a zombie. That being said, Ted will be in Dave’s hands for the next few episodes! 😀

    • He may indeed turn much sooner than she thinks, although he isn’t dead yet. He’s got to die before he turns.

      • And yet, TWD totally blows theories like that away – while I haven’t seen TWD myself, I can say from your descriptions that it certainly changes things up regularly to surprise it’s viewers! 😉 Maybe you should do that too, in future arcs. The shock value would be immense! 😀

      • Yeah. Now that I recall, Gene turned in just a few seconds (luckily!). Now that I’ve remembered this, I really worry that Ted might turn and bite someone. But I don’t think that’ll happen, you’ve doomed to death two characters in a short period and you can’t kill everyone, right?

  2. goodbye ted

    • Hey, he’s not gone yet.

      • You just spilled your guts, Dave. Ted is gonna live!

      • so he gonna live

  3. By the way, Dave, it’s not very clear from the unchanging expression on Ted’s face whether he’s in shock and can actually hear any of this going on. If he is slipping into unconsciousness, before bleeding out internally, and dying, then moving him is the worst thing they could do to him before he reanimates as a zombie. I know Barb’s a nurse, but she’s no doctor, so how would she know if Ted can even stay conscious long enough to say goodbye, even if he does make it down into the basement alive?

    • Ted’s expression actually did change. He went from wide-mouthed terror to gritted-teeth nervousness. As to whether he’s in shock here or not, well, that remains to be seen.

      • I think he is in shock, because if I put myself in his situation, I’d probably open my mouth in pain, again! 😉

  4. Finally, there’s trust issues, Ted just got shot by Clark, what exactly is running through his mind right now? Ted doesn’t necessarily know how good of a survivalist Clark is, and yet, he may possibly already have judged his character. Perhaps, if Ted is alive and able to get words out of his mouth, he will be voicing trust issues very shortly. Better out than in, as the saying goes! 😀

    • He may indeed. I know I’d certainly be upset about getting shot. Ted has a legitimate beef here.

  5. Ted is really dying apparently. I predict there’s is going to be some emotions flowing once his family discovers what happened.

Today’s question is a bit of a no-brainer. Escaping with a bite is much better. Being eaten alive is a great pain, and it might be a long death if the zombies aren’t a lot or if they attack your gut, because if their tore out your intestines it’ll be a slower death than a bite to the neck.

Escaping with a bite is a better option because you get the opportunity to say goodbye and live as best as you can your final moments. Plus, if for example, your group needs to run to the street but it’s full of zombies. You can always hang back and give them cover fire, and once you’re done you can shoot yourself in the head and prevent the pain from turning into a zombie. At least you’ll have died in a painless manner and you’ll have helped your group.

    • Going after your gut is definitely a nasty way to go, and quite likely considering that’s how many predators attack their prey.

    • My sentiments exactly. I’ll take the bite any day.

  6. Also, typo in the first paragraph of the ‘About This Episode’ section: hear should be written here.

    • Ah, thanks. Fixed.

  7. I have to agree. Id rather escape with a single bite and have a chance to do some good, make my peace, or maybe say goodbye. Besides, Id much rather have my brains blown out then be eaten alive.
I figure Ted is either going to tell Clark that his wife and kids are now his responsibility or that Clark will be some moved by his own sense of guilt and responsibility that he will take Teds family under his protection. I think Dave is warming up the “Hardcore loner learns that there is more to life” trope.

    • Hah, I may indeed be warming up that trope.

      • Too bad Barb is just a nurse…..cause what an injured minifig like Ted really needs is a PLASTIC SURGEON! (please forgive me, I had to say it)

      • hey wassup Dave
