Zombie Cliche Lookout: Scrum

When it comes to fighting zombies, you want to be as clean and methodical as possible. Bats and machetes will work if that’s all you have, but keeping the enemy at a distance is the best way to survive. When that’s not possible, you need to end the fight quickly and brutally; don’t give the zombie the chance to make any sort of physical contact with you. After all, it only takes a small scratch or bite to infect you.

Of course, these things are often not possible, nor are they consistently entertaining for the audience, so eventually the characters are going to wind up in an all out melee with the hordes of shambling corpses. This is substantially more dangerous, but it sure is fun to watch when no one you care about is in danger.

About this Episode:

I hope what I’m trying to do here is coming across. Essentially, I want to show that this fight, for as simple as it seemed on paper, is quickly getting out-of-hand for our heroes. They ran in with plenty of confidence, but they might just be outclassed in this engagement.

Other News:

The Double-Down Challenge is now officially closed. I’ll be reviewing entries and compiling a voting list for you guys soon, so watch out for updates there. We’ve had some incredible entries, so these are going to be tough choices.

Discussion Question: Immunity

What do you think about people who are immune to whatever it is that’s causing the zombie outbreak? A quick cavaet on this, I don’t want to include games in this discussion, since this seems like a necessary thing to do for game play purposes. Otherwise, a single injury would mean the end of your game. Outside of that, everything is free game.

  1. Typo alerts:

Zombie Cliche Lookout, first paragraph, first sentence, after the comma: a–>as 😀

Same section, second paragraph, first sentence, after the second comma:
    not are” not–>nor 😉

    Other News, third sentence: incredibly–>incredible

Some incredible typos there, Dave! 😀

    • After last episode’s nearly perfect run, I had to mess up a few times.

      Fixed all, thanks as always.

  2. Stewart is gonna be in some serious trouble unless he dispatches that zombie quickly, or one of the others is able to get to it first! 😀 I had this feeling Dave wants to thin down this group because it’s getting a little complicated story-wise, so here’s a question for people to discuss: Will Stewart survive unscathed or not? 😀

    • A very good question indeed. In fact, I think I’m going to build on your thoughts here for the next discussion question.

  3. The real worry, though, is Brent. He seems to have lost his weapon! Not a good sign if there’s a zombie trying to chew your face off! 😀

    • Yeah, both Brent and Stewart seem to be in a bit of a bind, don’t they?

  4. Watch out everybody he’s got Munities!
Has someone been watching Z nation? I’ve always hated this idea but then again it does happen and some people are carriers even with the most deadliest of diseases.

    • I haven’t watched Z Nation, actually. I don’t have cable, but I should try to get my hands on an episode or two. I hear it’s pretty decent.

  5. I tend to agree that if the root of the zombie apocalypse is a biological as opposed to some kind of mechanical process (I love the idea of rouge nanotechnology zeds because it ties up so many loose ends) then its only natural that some people are going to be immune. However, if Im not mistaken, a virus multiplying ans spreading throughout such a vast population going to be continuously mutating as it spreads. Thats just what viruses do. So a person may be immune to the virus in one group of zombies but not another. Especially if they travel large distances and the infection started at a central point. Its even possible the the virus would continue to multiply and mutate in the bodies of those who have already succumbed to it. In which case you would be immune one day but not the next. Kind of mind blowing aint it? This is a big part of the reason you never become immune to the common cold no matter how many times you get one.

    • There are some excellent points made here. It makes me want to talk to a virologist of something like that to get a better understand on exactly how things like this mutate, and how that affects their spread, immunity, and other things. I need to start doing more interviews for this site.

  6. Well like a lot of diseases I feel that at some point, people would be born with a immunity to the infection. So I’d say people immune to the zombie virus wouldn’t show up for a some time. Also while were on this topic, I saw a Spanish film that took this in a rather, different, direction. It was about a little girl who was immune to the infection, her and other kids where immune to it and they way to tell was they had three red marks on each side of their neck. The point of the movie is the little girl was told by her dying mother to go towards the sea and she’d be safe. I’m not going to spoil the ending, but I recommend watching it, a bit on the arty side but still, decent foreign film.

    • I’ve got no problem with “arty”, so long as the film is still good. What’s it called? I’d love to check it out.

  7. Intentionally, I would hope! You know, some will survive, others will make mistakes, or be too slow, and end up paying the price! 😉

Whilst these people have had a fair amount of experience in the zombie apocalypse, I’d say Brent would be a more logical choice to have something that will end his days than Stewart, and frankly, I’m hoping you wrote it with that sort of possibility in mind. I look forward to seeing who will end up infected in next week’s episode! 😉

    • Oh BV, you know me. I’m going to stretch this out for a few more episodes before any sort of big reveal like that.

  8. What is the name of the movie?

    • Is this in response to hackerkyle? I’m wondering the same thing.

  9. I would presume if a scratch can cause infection I’d avoid any physical contact that could cause their fluid to get on me in case I had an existing scratch. Since most existing contagious diseases are transferred through body fluids wouldn’t the zombie infection be the same. Rabies is one of those what out if you get bitten or scratched kind of fun things. Anyway no one has proven to be immune to rabies therefore chances are no one is immune to zombies. Only one person has survived rabies with intense care but she’s not immune. Wouldn’t people fall back on behaviors associated with knowledge we already have. ie get the gun out rather than whacking them? Okay that’s my 2 cents.

    • I didn’t know that about rabies (that no one is immune), I sense a wikipedia dive coming on in my future.

  10. I don’t know how you make such a great zombie story using so many cliches 😉

    • Hah!

Well, that’s actually one of the things I’m trying to do with Bricks of the Dead. It’s a zombie story, but I also want it to be a deconstruction of zombie stories at the same time.

  11. Dave Z Nation is not too bad just don’t try and dissect the plot and timeline too much. For some interesting virus discussions try catching a show called “The Last Ship”. Bonus Kate Beckinsale is the Doctor.

As to the question, while there will be some people immune to the virus you have to wonder how many of them would survive the method of transmission, i.e. being attacked by a horde of zeds.

    • The Last Ship sounds familiar; I’ll have to look it up.

  12. Sounds a bit like the plot of the movie “Solos”

  13. Sounds a bit like the plot of the movie “Solos”

  14. Hmm, sorry… looks like something is wrong with “reply”, I am absolutely sure I was replying the second time, but the comment goes on the bottom.

Anyway, this is in reply to Hackerkyle

  15. It’s called Descendents, here’s an IMDB link to their page on it http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1361838/?ref_=rvi_tt I have no clue where you can find it, found it on Demand one day when I was looking for a movie.

  16. Desendents = Solos 🙂
(I really didn’t like this one though)
