Zombie Cliche Lookout: …But You Have to Give Up Your Guns

People have a hard time trusting each other in the best of times, and that only gets worse when things get bad; this holds true for everything from the zombie apocalypse to traffic jams. I’d like to believe that difficult circumstances bring out the best in people, and I think sometimes they do. But I’ve also been through enough bad times with enough people to see just how awful they can be when the chips are down.

With that said, it’s just common sense to be cautious around people you don’t know in a survival situation. Yes, you may very well come to trust and depend on them, but that’s something that only comes after you’ve built a relationship and a personal history. Try to rush that, and you’ll be in for a world of hurt. So, where does most of this start? That’s right, once again we want to make sure that the other person isn’t armed, because we just don’t know what they might try to pull on us.

About this Episode:

Stewart is a character I really enjoy writing, because I try to write him how I would act when I was sixteen. Now, I wasn’t a horrible teenager, but I could certainly be a pain in the ass, especially when I thought I was the smartest guy in the room.

Discussion Question: Being Disarmed?

Outside of a moment where you’re ambushed and left with little choice but to disarm, under what circumstances would you consider giving up your weapon during a zombie apocalypse? What sort of things would the other party need to be in control of to convince you? Food, water, shelter? Perhaps they’re setup on a bridge that affords the only safe crossing point in the area?

  1. Typo alert, Zombie Cliche Lookout, first sentence, after the semicolon: “… bad; this hold true …” Change the bolded word to “holds”. 😀

Discussion Question, last sentence: “… bridge that’s affords …” Change the bolded word to “that”. 😉

These two are an incorrect plural and an incorrectly used contraction, respectively! 😀

    • Fixed both; thanks!

  2. Well Stewart might seem a little eager, but at least he’s got a valid point here. Now will they betray his trust and go all out with ammo sprayed everywhere, or is Dave too tired to put bullet holes through a scene in Photoshop again? 😀

    • Hah, I’ve actually got a pretty good bullet hole system these days.

  3. Bridge crossing site and maybe a wedding. Not disarming for that.

To put people at ease you need to show you are not aggressive, but are you talking giving your weapons to strangers or just putting them out of reach?

Think I would never give them up unless forced to, but could live with slinging them.

    • The North Remembers.

  4. I guess I could give up my main weapon if it’s the only way I’m getting through this checkpoint or whatever’s going on, but try to keep a blade and a boot gun.

  5. At this why didn’t they drop the clips into their own hands? The 2 “strangers” seem like they could handle the guns easy enough, the counter cliche to disarm, is oddly enough… Total disarm. Can’t use the guns on us, we can’t exactly use the bullets on you. Unless your the guy from shoot’em up.
