Zombie Cliche Lookout: You Can’t Defeat Me
Once again, we’re reaching beyond the zombie genre for a cliche, because it’s fun to try new things. This one comes to us primarily from action flicks, where the bad guy temporarily gets the upper hand when fighting the good guy, and pauses for a moment to gloat about things. Instead of, say, just murdering the good guy and then going out for a taco, they decide to monologue for a bit. That, of course, give the good guy the opportunity to turn the tables.
About this Episode:
Sadly, this set was damaged pretty heavily in the move (along with the cabin Stewart and Cheryl are hanging out in, which was pretty much completely destroyed other than the kitchen). Luckily, everything stayed relatively close and I was able to rebuild it with minimal fuss. Drama!
Other News:
Well, we’re back. I want to say thank you again to everyone who helped me out with guest strips, fan art, and reviews. You guys are beyond awesome. And thanks to everyone else for your patience and well wishes.
Things are going pretty well here. The move went well enough; we had lots of help and I basically just stayed out of the way. I’m getting my office put together now, but it’ll probably take me a few more weeks because I’m wheeling around in an office chair. I’ll post some pictures when we’re done.
My broken leg is healing up pretty well. I got new x-rays last week and was able to take off my cast and get my boot back, which is much more comfortable. Turns out I got nine screws rather than seven, so that’s something, right?
Discussion Question: The Walking Dead
So the fourth season of AMC’s The Walking Dead is coming to a close very soon. It’s been a weird season, with some very strong episodes, and some pretty weak moments. I’m wondering what everyone thinks of how things are working, and what the show needs to do to get back on track.
Welcome back Dave! Glad things are going well on the house and leg front!
As for TWD – in my humble opinion they should decide how and when its going to end. Everything between now and then could be focused towards that ending.
Dexter did this (ok the lumberjack ending sucked!) but we got 2 solid seasons focusing towards an end point after the series began to stutter at the 5/6 season range
I think TWD is beginning to crack under the pressure of its own success, forcing out character based episodes (where we effectively learn no more about the overarching story line) to drag the out an extra season. I’m convinced what ever they have planned for season 5 was supposed to be the second part of this season, instead we have this dragged out we’ll all end up at Terminus situation.
And what are they going to do next? Is Terminus the new Woodburry? Will it have a new Governor type leader? Recycling the old story lines doesn’t make a good show.
(i’m only at episode 5 of the season, catching up quickly)
If TWD is going to (very remotely) follow the comics… well… let’s just say the governor was a loving amateur compared to who’s showing up next.
Yes indeed. I’ll try to not give too much away, but Negan is making the Governor look like a damned boy scout.
Do we really want to see a Negan type though? I’ve always felt that it was rehashing the governor to be even more absurd. What ever next? Tigers 😉
No… I’m not looking for a Negan… I had enough of the governor too, but at the end of the episode of twd I was watching there he was… again.
I’d love it when twd would go back to the core… Zombies and how to deal with them. On the move, finding new things / situations. At the very least NOT stay too long in one place. I think you are right, they have to find where they want to go with the series. And don’t follow the very, very dark comic-series too much.
A tiger… yeah! 😉
Maybe they can do something with time-travel or dimensional gates, aliens which come to our rescue, or…or…or… zombie chickens, or Lara Croft or bugs zombie… or… well, let’s just be happy I’m not a writer on the show. 😛
I think you’re right on, FL. Zombies are a threat, despite how “easy” they seem to be to defeat.
Aren’t we all forgetting someone? The Hunters anyone? Cannibalism?
We’re getting into the part of the comics that I haven’t caught up with yet. I really need to pick up a few more volumes.
Thank you sir; it’s good to be back. On an unrelated note; I sent you an email: if you want to fix that last guest strip, just shoot me an updated image and I’ll get it replaced.
And I tend to agree with you about TWD. If the writers had an ultimate goal in mind, they could work toward it. Right now, it feels like they’re spinning a bit (that said, I didn’t see last night’s episode yet).
Trust me Dave, its just more spinning.
Happy to see you back Dave. And good to hear everything is going fine all things considered. Your two guest authors held up the fort pretty good though! My compliments to them 🙂
Oh my… did Sam just land with his hand about a centimeter from a very big gun? And Abe is gunless…
Thank you, sir.
Hah, he is pretty close, now that you mention it.
You know, Sam’s just about on top of that rifle in the background. I wonder if ol’ Able is seeing that coming? 😀
Plus who does he thing he is anyway? He’s no Rambo or Terminator, that’s for sure, and Sam is younger than him, if Sam decides to take the fight to him things could really go rather badly for ol’ Abe! 😀
I think Abe is someone who has started to believe his own BS.
*ol’ Abe
Yeah, I noticed the gin near to his hand also. I’m wondering if thats a precursor, or if its just random. In TWD I really hope they follow the comic for season 5, because this point in the comics to me were the best! (books 12-15). A lot of major character deaths as soon as book 14ish with Negan and Lucille.
Happy to know you are all better, Dave! Moving sucks, so I can be sympathetic to your plight. Best of luck!
Thank you, sir. The move actually went pretty well; I honestly can’t complain.
The kinda redeemed themselves with yesterdays episode. That’s all I’m going to say about that. The rest of the season was poop.
Oh and what it needs to do to regain my respect? Do a lot of what they did yesterday. The show has become too friendly for my zombie tastes.
Man am I looking forward to checking that one out.
I’m afraid The Walking Dead is losing the purpose of it. What do I mean by this? It means that the characters don’t have a goal no more, except the most common one: SURVIVE.
I suppose this happens with all z word stories. For example, during Season 1, Rick had the goal of finding his family and wait for military rescue. In Season 2, Rick had to handle Shane about his wife. In Season, we had a new brush of characters with the Governor, Woodbury and the prison. And Season 4? They stall it with a bunch of episodes where nothing important happens. Plus, ever since they lost the prison, the only thing they do is loot houses. There’s no actual conflict or goal anymore. We got some great character development, sure, but how will it drive the story? I hope this ‘Terminus’ leads to something more interesting and gives the characters a goal.
Excellent points, CallOfGaming.
Welcome back, boss!
I have a bad feeling about this… Sam does not strike me as the kind of guy who knows guns. Sure, it’s supposed to be “point an pull the trigger” but if it doesn’t (not loaded, not armed ,safety on…) figuring it out in the middle of a melee can only end badly.
Thank you, sir!
I think it’s funny how everyone knows where this is going.
I don’t know what kind of gun it is, but don’t guns occasionally go off if someone inexpertly triggers them when trying to get up? Sam could ‘accidentally’ off ol’ Abe and never even know how he did it! 😀
Of course a good author will know how to make the accident just perfect without seeming too out of place! 😀
Glad you’re healed up.
