Zombie Cliche Lookout: Um, Guys? Zombies.

You never want your lookout to come bursting into the room, yelling about a problem. Even if you’re not in the middle of (barely) surviving the zombie apocalypse, it’s a bad sign. After all, if you need to post a lookout, things can’t be going too terribly well for you. And if you are in the middle of the zombie apocalypse? Well, don’t make a lot of lone-term future plans.

And if your lookout does come rushing in, it’s probably a good idea to hear what he/she has to say. Odds are it’s important. Don’t get me wrong, everyone wants to know you wife and kids’ names, but they’d be better off hearing those after they hear about the gigantic biker gang that’s bearing down on them. Your mileage may vary, of course.

About this Episode:

I like adding new characters into the comic every now and then (got to keep plenty of cannon fodder available, right?) but I always hate doing introductions. They’re sort of a necessary evil: it would look weird for everyone to know each other magically, but taking the time to introduce themselves sucks the momentum out of the story.

On the other hand, it does give me the chance to use some of the awesome names you guys suggested. I decided to go with a bit of a theme for the family here. I think it fits.

Discussion Question: Post-Apocalyptic, Zombie Killing Tunes

This is it. The zombies are here. Civilization has failed. You managed to survive the initial chaos, and are now living a bleak day-to-day existance finding food and killing/avoiding zombies. By all accounts, it’s not a fun way to live. Luckily, you managed to keep your MP3 player and solar charger with you (nice job, guy!). The question is: what’s in your zombie survival playlist?

  1. teddy and ted, hm… oh well i thought that you might name them charecters for the movie Ted. That would’ve beem funny

    • I haven’t seen it. Someday, perhaps.

  2. but some tunes for the zombie apocalypse? Lots and lots of avenged sevenfold, like not ready to die, and i know that at some point someones going to say Down with the Sickness, 84% sure.

    • The Richard Cheese version of course

      • Always fun.

    • I was a pretty big fan of Disturbed’s first album. It seems like they completely went off the rails with the second one though.

  3. *Cracks knuckles* “Let’s do this” Gaz voice.

To start off, the Rolling Stones with “Doom and Gloom”. To follow some Guns N’ Roses playing “Welcome to the Jungle”, to make things a bit more interesting I’ll add “Explode” by Droptek. Afterwards I’d enjoy some “Top of the World” by Stephen Walking. Furthermore Wagner with “Ride of the Valkyries”. This will come into play when someone is running with some sort of explosive and begins to blow stuff up. To finalise, we can’t live without some Toto. “Africa” you’ve made the cut!

Typo alert: Manager should be managed in “You manager to survive…”

    • Not bad, Phantom. Not bad at all.

Thanks for the head’s up on the typo; I’ll get that fixed.

  4. “no love” by Eminem ft lil Wayne, and” the troop” by AC-DC

    • The Troop is cool; I’m not familiar with the other song. I’ve never been an Eminem fan though.

  5. A problem? If he’d failed to keep the zombies out, I’d think he’d be a bit more worried, so I’m going to guess that there are a few more zombies than we were expecting out there.

    Question:
If you’re asking what I would listen to in combat, the answer is “listen out for zombies”, no music is worth getting ambushed for. During downtime, probably Iron Maiden or Nightwish, those are a couple of my favourites.

    • Probably a pretty good theory, WJS.

As far as the question goes; this is more of a “for fun” one than a serious survival scenario.

  6. “Seek and Destroy” Metallica
    “Creeping Death” Metallica
    “Fuel” Metallica
    “Jump in the Fire” Metallica
    “One” Metallica
    “Peace Sells….” Megadeth
“More Human than Human” White Zombie
The entire Hellbilly Deluxe album by Rob Zombie
    “Vampires” Godsmack
    “Whatever” Godsmack
    “Broken” Pantera
    “Grind” Alice in Chains

    • I approve. Needs more Pantera and AiC though.

      • Pantera “Cemetery Gates”
        AC/DC “Highway to Hell”
Iron Maiden “Fear of the Dark”, “Number of the Beast”, and “Be Quick or be Dead”
The Rolling Stones “Sympathy for the Devil” and “Gimme Shelter”
Pretty much the entire “Who’s Next” album (since it’s about running away).

That’s just off the top of my head this morning…

        • I’m completely on board with this.

        • Of course keeping the Ipod charged is going to be interesting. I’d recommend a car charger and an inverter/generator set to keep the laptop running. You could always use the laptop for PSK communications (sending text over amateur radio) and plug it into whatever is keeping your ham shack on the air.

May as well have some tunes in the car, too, since AM/FM is sure to be down in a WCS.

I’ll have to think more about this as I am moving to turn my commuter car into a mini BOV.

  7. Music playlist:
Bands for Killin time= Clutch, Dream Theater, Cake, Schaffer the Darklord, Kittie and Slipknot

    • I’m not familiar with Schaffer or Clutch, but based on the others you have, I imagine I’ll like them.

      • Clutch is a solid rock band and Schaffer is Nerdcore, Tube’em, enjoy!

  8. I like the idea of being plugged in to some classical music (Mozart, Bach, Beethoven etc) whilst caving in zombie skulls/chopping off heads. The peacefulness and tranquility of the music keeping you calm and focused whilst you fight your way out of a tight spot

    • I like it! Throw some Stravinski in there too.

  9. “I Knew You Were Trouble” – Taylor Swift <3

    • Nice!

  10. I like most of these, especially Disturbia and Avenged Sevenfold, I would also throw in a little Prodigy (Smack my Bitch up ) No need for political correctness during the ZA. Plus Dies Irae from Mozarts Requiem (3rd movement) and probably some Beethoven. Finally I would top it off with a few really classic and out of place pieces. Like maybe Sinatra s Summer Wind or that remix of Elvis’ A Little Less Conversation

    • I like how eclectic this is. Keeps things interesting.

  11. Little Teddy’s grin is way too wide considering what he’s just seen.

It’s the zombie apocalypse, kid. Get your head in the game. At least Clark’s paying attention.

    • Ha ha, yeah. I thought that was hilarious. You can get the best look at him on panel 3. Dave is gonna have to get a new face for him to be used when zombies get blown to smithereens in front of him.

  12. “We Are One” by 12 Stone.

    “Highway to Hell” by AC/DC

“It’s The End of The World as We Know It” by R.E.M

    “Counterweight” by Heaven Shall Burn

    Halloween Theme Song

    “Iron Man” by Black Sabbath

“Rock You Like A Hurricane” by Scorpions

“Justin Bieber” by Bizarre and King Gordy (It’s a song about killing Justin Biber.)

  13. God’s Gonna cut you down ~ Johnny Cash
Seven Nation Army ~ White Stripes
Ain’t no Rest for the Wicked ~ Caged the Elephant
Scream of the Butterfly ~ Acid Bath
    Down the Road ~ C2C
The Ukrainian Carol ~ Mykola Leontovych
    Radioactive ~ Imagine Dragons
Ain’t not Sunshine when she’s gone ~ Bill Withers
Make it Bun Dem ~ Skrillex Feat. Daiman Marley
    Elements ~ Lindsey Stirling
Feel so Numb ~ Rob Zombie
I believe in a thing called Love ~ The Darkness

The list could actually possibly go on for miles, but I realize that I don’t have miles or the ability to remember names to list all of the songs on my playlist.

  14. I would def have Linkin Park’s A Thousand Suns album. I listened to this the entire time I played fallout 3. Thought it worked really well for an apocaliptic world

  15. I’ll probably upload everything I can cram onto the MP3 player like Folk, Filk and Abney Park.

  16. Nothing; the mp3 player would be the first thing to ditch/sacrifice for survival.
I’d have more important things to worry about than making playlists, and listening to music would be an unnecessary (and potentially deadly) distraction anyway; using a speaker dock would attract unwanted attention and using earbuds/headphones would dampen my awareness of my surroundings. Considering how stealthy zombies (and other survivors) can be, I’m not going to want to miss any subtle noises like shuffling or breathing because I was jamming to my favorite tunes. That’d be one of the dumbest ways to die.

  17. “Staying Alive” Bee Gees
    “We are Family” Sister SLedge

    What? I love disco . .

    • “Staying alive”… I love it Luis! That’s the kind of joke they could have added in Shaun of the Dead.

    • There’s a PR campaign going around, by the American Heart Association, I think, regarding the tempo for CPR. They state that “Staying Alive” has the perfect beat for CPR.

To which I reply, “Yeah? So does ‘Another One Bites the Dust’!”

      • The one we were taught was “Nellie the Elephant”. According to our instructor, it has the right number of beats for the number of compressions too.

  18. I don’t know if it’s been said but I think the obvious choice is “In a Heartbeat” from 28 days later cause that was awesome suspensful zombie theme music!!

  19. What’s in my MP3? Music, of course! 😛

Radioactive, by Imagine Dragons, Short Change Hero and How You Like Me Now by The Heavy, Airship Pirate by Abney Park, Mumford and Sons…Among many others. I tend to like individual songs in many different styles.

  20. I say the one band for the zombie apocalypse is cryoshell. maybe.

  21. dubstep? maybe skrillex? how about something we can all agree on? like… we all seem to like metal, and modern pop… or whatever the hell you wan’t to call it, and some country, ill add this up and be back in a moment

    • well im back abd thought that for all of those genres, the best song that i can think off the top of my head would be Radioactive by imagine dragons (childish name huh?)
