Bonus Feature Cliché Lookout: Mobius

Okay, so this isn’t really a cliché of bonus features at all, but you guys already knew that. No, this is a straight up cartoon show trope. Animation is a slow, painstaking process. In order to get out cartoons on time and on budget, occasional shortcuts have to be made. One such process, animation loops, helps streamline the process by re-using steps in the animation.

For repetitious thing, like the cycle of someone’s running legs, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to re-draw the same thing over and over. Instead, simply re-use what has already been done. Of course, animators used this for other things as well. Take, for instance, one character chasing another, which is a staple of cartoon shows. If the case covers any real distance, a considerably amount of background will need to be drawn. But what if you make the case that the chase is basically run in a big circle? Presumably, they’d run by the same couch, chair, window, etc. a number of times, right?

This translates pretty handily to the comic. Instead of building a ton of room to follow the chase, I’m just going to say these two characters are running in a circle and pass the same door and water cooler a couple of times. Then I quit early and have a beer.

  1. But how’d you make the water cooler? 😉

    • Place a 61780 upside down, insert an upside down 30151 into the central hole on the bottom, place a 2654 on the bottom of the 30151, on the top of the crate, upside down, place 2x 44728, finally still upside down, place a 3003, and on the front of one of the 44728’s place a 3794 with a 4599 on the stud and finally place a 3069b on the other half of the front. Optional: Place a 3068b on the other 44728 if wanting a more boxy look without studs on it. 😀 I hope that helps, Dave can correct me if anything is wrong! 😀

      • You could also place one or more 2412b’s, optionally with 3069b as well on the other 44728 if wanting a ventilation opening! 😀

        • I assume all your parts numbers are right; sounds about right to me.

        • A little research on BrickLink would confirm that! 😀
That’s where they came from! 😉

      • AAAAAGHH! numbers! I never bother to learn the part numbers, speak english!

        • Normally I would, but that’s a whole lot of extra typing. 😀 Still, it wouldn’t stop someone from making an image or video of how it goes together! 😀

  2. Next 5 episodes will be about these two. One pop out of the water thing ( can’t think of the name I’m to tired) one pop out the door and then yacaty sacks from the 3 stooges.

    • One of them slowly lowers from the ceiling, then slowing goes back up before the other runs by.

Cheryl is suddenly chasing Guy, then they realize what’s going on, and reverse.

I could do this for weeks!

    • Exactly.

      • It’ll save me a ton of time on building sets, too!

  3. I am disappointed by this one. It is not amusing the way others have been.

    • Print 12 copies of this webcomic onto paper, cut the panels out and sandwich them together in the correct order and flip back and forth through them! 😀 Only thing is one of the panels is slightly misaligned horizontally or this would actually work brilliantly! 😀

      • I love this!

The misaligned panel was done to suggest movement. I’m thinking it didn’t work like I had in my head.

      • I suppose I could try that, see if it restores my faith in Dave’s Bonus Features.

    • Man, I’m just disappointing people left and right here lately.

      • look on the bright side – at least you’re not like Doyle. He’s only just started moving the plot of his comic OUT of last year’s advent plot 😛

  4. LOL.

Of course, I’d never stoop to such production shennanigans in my webcomic. Nuh-uh, nope, never, no sirree!

    • You know what they say, Louise: “If you’re going to steal, steal well.”

  5. You need to read this comic while listening to this.

    • Exactly what I had in my head when I was making this.

  6. I love the pink mug. Dave rocks! lol

  7. its the classic flintstone scenario, the same screen over and over. and old show is an example of this 40 year old art… thing…
