Zombie Cliche Lookout: Multitasking

Managing people is an important part of any emergency situation, and the zombie apocalypse will be no different. That’s why police are always on hand at fires and car accidents: to keep interested and impatient citizens safe, and to prevent them from getting in the way of the people who are trying to save lives and prevent further property damage. In my youth, I would have said that people should be smart enough to stay out of the way, but acting on the assumption leads to nothing but trouble, which I’ve learned the hard way on more than one occasion. Play it smart, and plan for people being idiots.

In this case, Russell recognizes that Sam and Cheryl likely need a couple of minutes to talk before they’re ready to roll out, so he’s doing his best to maximize the time they spend inside the pharmacy so that they don’t get boxed in.

About this Episode:

Hey, we’re back. I know it’s been quite a while, and I’m really thankful for everyone’s patience. I’m still really buy at work these days, but I think I’ve finally found some much needed equilibrium. I’m also going to be shooting three episodes a week to help build up a cache of episodes for when things get out of hand again.

Enjoy the double-length episode. I know it’s not much of an apology, but it’s better than nothing, right?

Discussion Question: Filling the Gap

So what did everyone do to fill the time when Bricks of the Dead was on hiatus? This is a bit of a tongue-in-cheek question, since I know that reading the comic doesn’t take that much time out of everyone’s life. That said, it’s been a bit since we’ve talked, so let’s play catch up.

  1. Typo alerts:

“everyone’s live” live–>life 😀 Or should that be “lives”, the plural of life? Up to Dave to pick one. 😉

“maximize the time they spent” Swapping ‘spent’ over to ‘spend’ would be a better fit since it seems they’re going to spend more time here. 😉

    • Fixed both; thanks!

  2. Well, I reckon the double episode more than makes up for the hiatus, although it wasn’t really necessary that you did so. I thank you for having done the four extra panels, though! 😀

    • My pleasure!

  3. As for the discussion question, I continued to stumble my way through modded Minecraft as usual, so nothing new there. 😉

    • Is there any sort of mod manager you’d recommend? My son has been wanting to do modded Minecraft, but I need to make it as easy to do as possible.

      • Well, it depends a lot on what you understand about how to sort conflicting mods out, and what your son wants to do in modded Minecraft. I’d recommend heading over to the Minecraft forums at Curse, and seeing what modpacks are available through their client. That being said, Curse does take some tweaking so as to properly minimize memory usage. 😉

How old is your son, if you don’t mind me asking? If he decides to try multiplayer, he’s naturally going to run into people that swear to various degrees. You might want to set up some sessions so that you can be there to offer parental guidance and all that. 😀

        • He’s seven, so he doesn’t want to do anything too complex. He just saw his cousin doing some modded play with different monsters and materials and got all excited about it.

        • Yeah, although being a seven year old, he might surprise you as to what he can figure out! 😀 It sounds as if you should try to aim for modpacks with relatively few overall mods, to reduce the number of recipes he’ll have to look through at one time. I’d recommend sitting down with him and working through some modpacks to see if there’s something he likes he can grasp relatively easily. 😉

Does he like tech mods or magic mods? There are modpacks themed towards both, although most modpacks tend to mix tech with magic, there are a few, though, that go one way or the other.

        • I’m sure he would like those. The only mod he played had a bunch of extra blocks, monsters, villager types, and weapons/tools. I have no idea what it was called, but he talked about it for days (I didn’t see it). I’ll check that site out, thanks for the recommendation.

  4. I also have a Discussion Question: What’s the most unconventional way you’ve come across of killing hordes of zombies, be it in books, movies, or other fictional zombie works?

Most people kill zombies in the conventional manner, or with a stumbling start until someone figures out what stops the zombies from being roaming undead. But how inventive have fiction writers and movie directors been in killing off masses of zombies?

Would you like to see more ways of killing zombies, or is it that once you’ve seen one means of dispatching the zombies that you’ve suddenly seen them all?

    • I like it! I’ll use it for Wednesday’s episode.

  5. I was sad at the ab absence of “Bricks of the Dead”. Mostly because it seems like every zombie webcomic I’ve come to enjoy has gone on to an indefinite hiatus (“Everyday Decay”, “Ed Mann Walking”, and even “Dead Winter” to a lesser extent).

I’m happy to see “Bricks of the Dead” up and running once again, and hope to see some story-lines tied up.

    : )

    • Thanks for your kind words! I’m definitely planning to bring characters back together and get the comic moving in some new directions.

      • Great to hear! : )

  6. Welcome back!

    • Thanks!

  7. Feels good to have some routine back LOL.

While I was waiting on the comeback of BotD, I worked on my own comic and try to gather info on LEGO micro building and LEGO building in general. And watch baseball…

Nice episode to get back on track, we don’t feel like a new season is starting LOL. Or maybe we do actually, with the extra long episode (like TWD like to do at the beginning or the end of a half season)

    • Oh, and I read the wonderful comic of Ballinabricky!!

      • Wasn’t that guest series great?

So did you do any microbuilding? I’m a huge fan of micro-city builds. The imaginative parts usage complete blows me away.

    Amongst other projects.

Of course now that you’re back I’m heading off. :/
But the new episodes will be waiting in my RSS feed. 🙂

    • Nice!

Where are you off to? Hopefully somewhere fun.

      • Thanks.

Going to visit the brother and his family. So yes, it will be.

  9. Maximize their multitasking while others clear their feelings in private moment? Maybe if they are all A-type personalities who are corporate execs with psychology degrees.
For the rest of us mere mortals it was more of “This is awkward let me get away and oh ya let’s get this done before the zeds come and eat us” moment.

  10. Not that it’s important or anything, but there is no mouseover text for this comic. 😀 Just wondering if you’re bringing that back or not? 😉

  11. “Play it smart, and plan for people being idiots.” –> Love that.
    Welcome back Dave!
