Zombie Cliché Lookout:
Every now and then the people you think you’ve got figured out will surprise you. The faithful husband cheats on his wife of twenty years, the put-together young executive hides a destructive gambling addiction, and the wanton coward comes back from running away to save the day. Horror flicks love this trope. They’ll spend the whole movie steering you in one direction on a character, just so that they can have them pull a 180 in the third act.

      But before reading this, I thought it’s one of the girls.
      And it can’t be Stu, the zed dragged him into that room.

      • No, there’s a dead skeleton and some remains in that room. Stewart is off-screen but still outside the room, as far as I can tell. He was just visible in the 5th panel of Episode 88.

        Unless Dave wants to prove otherwise? 😉

        Definitely looked like the zed was gonna drag him into the room.
        He might not be visible in this episode; but how would he get from the room to the other side of the hall without being spotted? 😀 😉

      • Stewart was definitely dragged into the other apartment in the last episode. I apologize if that wasn’t clear. And that – ladies and gentleman – is why one of my 2011 goals is to improve my photography!

        I think what Brickvoid is seeing is the difference in flooring between the hallway and apartment. Since it’s in the distance and out-of-focus it does sort of look like it could be a person.

      • @Dave: I think you should use drag lines that most comic artists use to indicate where someone is/has been dragged in a panel. Or perhaps experiment with motion blur, rotatable LEGO parts, some string, and a deft touch! 😉

      • @Brickvoid – Common comics visual vocabulary doesn’t really work well with LEGO unless there’s a lot of retouching. Usually brick comics tend to not have motion lines or other visual shorthand, having to rely on greater viewer investment in the image to construct the tale from concrete images alone, not symbols. It’s more like a European comic in that way… but with a lot more sound effects.

      • I’ve been thinking a lot about ways to do that without it looking hokey. I’ll have to experiment a bit with double exposure and look for some other techniques.

        As a matter of course, it’s not something I would make a common practice of. As put so well by LB, it just wouldn’t work as well in a brick/photocomic. When/if I figure something out to that effect, it’ll be used sparingly.

      • IMO it was perfectly clear that Stu was dragged into the room by that zombie.

      • I nearly went on the obligatory Canadian’s rant about hockey before I realized you were going for the work pronounced “hoe-key.” Can’t recall how it’s spelled offhand, but at least the hockey is not besmirched.

      • @Lich that is indeed a typo. This comic is proudly produced in Michigan, where we appreciate our hockey (the fact that the Wings are the only consistently good professional team in the state might have something to do with that).

      • Considering how consistently subpar most Canadian teams have been of late, that’s definitely a sport – and team – worthy of appreciation.

        And I get typos – after all, I wanted “word” and typed “work” in my previous post. 😉

  3. FYI – I rewrote this scene to have Murphy use the fire extinguisher (he was originally going to bash the zed with the trash can) thanks to Adelaide C. F.’s suggestion.

    • Hey Larkin,
      There are a lot of ways to do it. Bricks of the Dead is on it’s own site, and uses the Comic Press theme for WordPress. I have to pay a hosting company for that. There are other, free options out there though. I’d ask around at the BCN and see what people recommend. I know there are some good solutions.
