Zombie Cliche Lookout: Taking it Personal

If there’s one thing the zombie apocalypse will be full of, it’s death. Yeah, deep insight, right? A world filled with cannibalistic walking corpses will lead to many people dying? You don’t say. Okay, okay, but I’m building to something here. Dealing with death is difficult in the best of times, but in hardship it can become only worse. Not only is there the pain of loss, but there’s also one less person contributing to the group, making things more dangerous overall. The optimist can say that’s also one less mouth to feed, but that’s cold comfort indeed.

On the other hand, with all that death, one will get lots of practice at developing various coping techniques to deal with the trauma. That’s something, right?

About this Episode:

When Sam and Stewart were brought back together, there was some major unresolved history between them. Stewart was hard on Sam, and Sam almost got Stewart killed. But a lot happened in the time they were separated, and they came back as pretty different characters. We saw Sam’s journey, and now I wanted to touch on Stew’s reason for maturing a bit: he holds himself responsible for Brent’s death.

Discussion Question: A Bit of Growing Up

Stewart is our youngest main character by a pretty wide margin. Sure, we’ve got some actual kids that show up here and there, but a teenager is the youngest person who gets any solid amount of screen time. This is a pretty formative age for someone to go through so much hardship and trauma, especially since they had previously lived such a safe and comfortable life. How do you think the events of Bricks of the Dead will affect Stewart as he grows up? This assumes, of course, that he does grow up and doesn’t get eaten by a zombie in the next episode.

  1. Typo alert: “now I wanted to touch of Stew’s reason” of–>on 😀

    • Fixed, thanks!

  2. I’m not sure I get the reason why these episodes were silent. It seems well done, but it skips quite a bit here. I hope we’re back to normal episodes next week! 😀

    • Not on Monday, but maybe Wednesday’s episode.

  3. Could someone please give me the link to the episodes where Brent got bit.

      Here you go! 😀

      • Poor Brent.

      • Thanks! 🙂

    There’s the song!;)

    Stew could go two ways.
    1. He could surprisingly grow and mature quite normally. Become a good member of the group. He seems to be going down this path right now.

    2. Or…He could become a broken coward. Having no loyalty. Doing anything to survive. Kinda like Eugene in The Walking Dead Tv Series. Stew doesn’t seem to be tied to morals or principles. He just seems like he’s trying to survive. And so far, this group has been the safest way.

    • Good read on him, Pepper. I think those are pretty reasonable options. I’d posit a third: plagued by guilt, he starts taking pointless, stupid risks to prove himself.

      • Oh, yes! That’s a good one too. 🙂
