Zombie Cliche Lookout: Making Sure

In zombie fiction, one member of the group is often bitten without being immediately killed. For a short time, they’re able to continue to contribute to the welfare of the group, but the infection tends to spread quickly and knocks them out of the fight. Eventually, they’re confined to bed rest, and there’s usually one member of the group who sits with them, making them as comfortable as possible. That person often has a rough history with the injured group member, and their standing by serves as an act of contrition. This serves two functions: first is the all important hospice aspect,  but the secondary goal is to have someone there at the moment of death to ensure that person doesn’t come back as a zombie. My favorite example of this is from the original, 1978 version of Dawn of the Dead.

About this Episode:

This episode is the start of a short series of silent comics where there is no dialog, sound effects, or other messages. I wanted to make them seem like a sort of montage like you’d see in a movie. A lot of stuff is happening quickly, so rather than focusing on speech, it’s just images. If it helps, just imagine some background music. That’s what I did, anyway.

On another note,  it was really tough getting Brent in the bed without looking weird. I ended up rebuilding the bed twice to try to accommodate the minifig before I realized that I was approaching the problem from the wrong end. Instead, I built a small trough in the bed for Brent’s head, and then just added a few 1×1 round bricks underneath to stabilize him. Problem solved.

Discussion Question: Soundtrack

We’re watching a short montage in Bricks of the Dead. Tell me what you’re hearing in the background as you read it. If it’s a real song, give me the name and artist. If it’s just of vague instrumental, describe it to the best of your ability.

  1. One thing’s for sure he’s not totally a zombie yet, but he’s about 99% of the way there given that his head has turned into a zombie head. 😀

I see that Russell was chosen to give the final blow to the head to prevent him from coming back as a zombie, that seems logical.

    • Hah, he’s definitely almost there.

  2. Typo alert: “just image some” image–>imagine 😀

Looking good, only one for today! 😀

    • Fixed!

  3. I’ve no idea of what kind of soundtrack would be appropriate although anything with the lyrics “never gonna let you go” or something similar in it would be thought-provoking material at the very least! 😀

    • 😀

      • Hah, nice!

        • I was thinking maybe some goth music. Either that or slow, dramatic classical. Probably Baroque period.

        • Very nice.

I was thinking solo piano, very low tempo.

  4. “There’s a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza,
There’s a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, a hole.”

That’s the song that I hear as I read this! It’s been stuck in my head all day. It was on a tv commercial, and now it’s torturing my brain! Lol! 😀

    • Thankfully, I’m not familiar with that one.

  5. Now there’s a hole in Brent’s head, dear Liza, dear Liza,
There’s a hole in Brent’s head, dear Liza, a hole.

    • Ah, now I see where you were going with that.

  6. A) “it was really touch”

    B) I’ve done that so many times. I forget that everything I’m designing doesn’t need to be as complete as independent objects in the real world (i.e. things inside other things, moving/articulated parts, etc). I still need to remind myself sometimes when I’m having a frustrating build.

    • Yep Ballinabricky found another typo touch–>tough 😀 Thanks, I don’t find them all of the time! 😀

      • Fixed!

Also, I’m glad someone else has tricked themselves into making things more difficult than they need to be.

        • All. The. Time. (and often with Lego, too 😉 )

        • That makes me wonder if your boss tricked himself into making your recent drama with your job more difficult than it needed to be! 😀

        • Hah, she wouldn’t even need to trick me, to be honest.

  7. U2 – The Troubles (I think it may have been used in TWD at some point).

    • Nice! I was hoping for some pop music on here. I keep waiting for Hallelujah.

    • Ooh! I really like that song! Yes. It was in some promos for season 5!
