Zombie Cliche Lookout: Moving On

I’ve probably mentioned this a time or two, but dealing with interpersonal conflicts while also trying to survive the zombie apocalypse is no easy feat. You’re much better off making amends with people and building trust than holding on to any resentment. After all, you’re going to need to have their backs, and trust that they’ll have yours when the shit hits the fan. If there’s too much unsettled drama there, no one knows who they can count on. That lack of trust can be deadly.

Of course, if you know you can’t trust someone, you should either cut them loose or never depend on them in your planning. Just look at Steve from the 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake. The rest of the group counted on that jerk, and almost got wiped out as a result. Make amends or cut your losses. Anything else is too much risk.

About this Episode:

Whenever I see characters shake hands in a movie or TV show, I always think of my favorite movie handshake: the one between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Carl Weathers in Predator. That’s the reason for the mouseover text. And, just in case you don’t know what I’m talking about:

Discussion Question: Who Should be Apologizing?

It’s been a hell of a long time since Sam and Stewart have seen each other, at least as far as people reading this are concerned (it’s been a few days in terms of the actual comic). I, like probably many of you, don’t recall all details, and had to go back and re-read a bit. For those of you who haven’t re-read, who do you recall being in the wrong, and why? Same question for those of you who have, but let me know if your memory changed before and after reviewing things. Also: did Sam going outside to act as a diversion make any difference to the score between the two characters?

  1. Sam was in the wrong. Sure Stew is an ass. But you just gotta deal with that. Sam had a meltdown at a terrible time.

So, his actions put him at a negative 10 in the score.

Learning of the loss of his wife, and all the shit he’s gone through. His meltdown makes more sense. So that takes away 5 of his negative points.

    -5

And stew being an ass takes half of a negative point away.

    -4.5

And the distraction he created should clear up the rest of those negative points. Maybe even put him UP half a point!

    .5

    There you have it.
    Sam: .5
    Stew: 0

Sam made a huge mistake, but he had his reasons and he more than made up for it. And then he went and slaughtered a whole family. 🙂

    Lol! 😀

    • Hah, I like how you enumerated everything.

    • For Sam’s slaughtering of a whole family, I hereby deduct 1,000 points. 😀 Sam’s new score: -995 !

For Sam’s completion of getting Gramps’s medications I also add 100 points – he had help, so I can’t add extra. Score -895 points 😀

For all of the hijinks and animosity that will erupt between Sam and Tara, I hereby throw the scoreboard in the nearest river/creek/lake at the earliest opportunity! 😀

      • Haha! That would be really cool, to do this for all of the characters in the comic. Or maybe Twd.

  2. I had forgotten about that handshake in Predator… thank you for the reminder, you made my day (and now I need to watch that movie again). Speaking of handshakes – I don’t mean to be picky, but Sam and Stew are having more of a fist bump.. which is a bit out of character for Sam, innit?

    • Hah, well we do the best we can with LEGO hands.

      • No complaints on the Legos 😉

As for Stew and Sam–we all have to remember that it happened EARLY in the Apocalypse. Too many people forget that the Apoclaypse is the break down of society as a whole (not something that’s intermediate like a poweroutage that lasts a while). Everyone has to relearn how the new world is going to work, and deal with the fact that everyone else is learning it at a different rate than they are.

Stewart couldn’t accept the loss of a loved one that quick and that was his wife carrying their unborn child. She died a horrendis death. Later he loss track of his friends and was kidnapped by a group that tried to force their beliefs on him (be it religious or their nighilist views on society). He was in a horrible place, plain and simple.

Sam was the youngest member of the group. From his actions, it seems that he was trying to gain respect, but felt that everyone looked down on him (before they actually started to). He didn’t know how to go about getting their respect and that caused trouble. While nothing was ever said about it, I imagine Sam had trouble couping with not seeing his own family. He’d have no idea about his mom or dad or how to contact them without using digital devices in a world that he grew up in using only that. It’d be hard for the guy.

Both are people that had to be forged in fire to get to where they are now. Now that the cast is moving into the POST-Apocalypse setting (one where society has learned to reform itself with new rules and terms of conduct) they are individuals that can work together and survive.

Now I’d gladly have either one on my team. 🙂

        • Really nice Assessments here, Wacky! Other than mixing up Sam and Stewart’s names. 😉 I’m not sure if id want either of them on my team. Haha! Too selfish, both of them. And I am too, probably. Lol!

  3. I started re-reading, but haven’t gotten far enough to say who was wrong. I’m trying to memorize names so I can keep track of who’s who.
