Zombie Cliche Lookout: The Full Story

There is a certain type of character that shows up in many stories (this is by no means exclusive to zombie fiction) is one who is keeping a lot of secrets, but isn’t terribly sneaky about it. Everyone knows there’s more he/she isn’t revealing, and they can react to that fact in a number of different ways. For some, it’s a clear signal that this character cannot be trusted. If they’re hiding something, it’s clearly something bad, which means everyone else needs to keep their eyes on them. On the other hand, it might be that this person is just very guarded and uncertain about things. It might be that the other characters have to earn that trust, and break down those walls before they can really get the whole story.

About this Episode:

Not really related to this episode per se, but I’m going to add it here anyway. I won’t be responded to comments this week (doing both write-ups today), as I’m going to be traveling for work. Also, I’ll be taking the following Monday off, as that is the Memorial Day holiday here in the US. Apologies, as always. Please carry on the conversation in my absence!

Discussion Question: Keeping Secrets

You find yourself in a group of complete strangers a few days into the zombie apocalypse. Your friends and family are gone. Perhaps you got separated, perhaps you’re the only one who made it. Regardless, you’re completely on your own now. Most of the people in your new group seem to know each other, some are quite close. This puts you in an awkward situation. These people have taken you in, but you don’t know each other. Do you trust them? Do you let them trust you? How much do you keep in reserve?

  1. Regarding the Discussion Question, how much of what does one keep in reserve? If it’s ammo clips, well an extra one or two would suffice for dealing with friends you suddenly have to kill once they get themselves bitten and could turn into a zombie at any moment. 😀

I think most people would worry about the practicalities of things and if they suddenly don’t trust someone, then logic would dictate that the person in disfavor might be asked to leave the group or become outcast or suddenly finds themselves on the fringes of excursions for food and supplies where the zombies have a much greater chance of attacking people.

The short version is, if a group doesn’t trust someone, they’re going to find themselves at the edges of the group where the zombies would most likely attack.

  2. Typo alert: “I won’t be responded to comments” responded–>responding 😀

I sincerely hope you play catch up Wednesday week and at least take a little time to respond to any good comments! 😉

More typos, or at least a sentence alteration: “Everyone knows there’s more he/she isn’t revealing,” Replace “he/she isn’t” with “they aren’t” – it’s a much smoother flowing sentence and makes sense where either or both sexes are implicatively referenced.

  3. “Kills Vicky and both kids ..” Is Dave preemptively hinting that he’s killing them off-screen or is he suggesting that is what Barb believes has happened? 😀

Wednesday’s episode will be very interesting, indeed! 😀

  4. Also, irrespective of whether Dave is late to comment, I do expect comments from him, eventually! 😀

  5. Poor Clark.

Thanks for the heads up, Dave! Happy to hear we get a comic on Wed/Thursday! 😀
    See you next Wed/Thu! 👍

Okay, with that out of the way, let’s get to the episode! Shall we? 🎬

Like Dave said, there are two types of liars here. 🕵🕵
The sneaky sneakers; The ones that lying to hurt others, and help themselves.
And the Nervous & Uncertain; The ones that can’t trust others enough to tell them anything.

Sneaky sneakers have to be taken out. They just can’t be trusted. They’ll put others in danger, steal food, frame others. They gotta go.🔫 :l

But the others, they are very cautious. So, when they get comfortable with the group, they can help feel out other groups/survivors. And can maybe catch things that other, more trusting, members might not. This can save lives!

You need to be able to tell the difference. ✔

    Question:
If they seem like good friends. That would make them seem a lot more approachable. I’d want to make friends. I don’t think I’d hide too much. I definitely ( Probably. ) wouldn’t lie. 😉
I’d probably try to make a joke about how I’m the odd man out. Maybe this could help break down some walls. Or it could just make it Ten times more awkward. Hah! 😀

    🏁 End of Comment! 🏁

    Word of the day:
    “Entrapped”
“He entrapped himself in the web of his own lies.”

    • Question: What happens if nobody in the group is smart enough to detect a sneaky sneaker? Let’s make a hypothesis: Sneaky sneaker doesn’t get caught, but gets bitten one day, and after he turns into a zombie and dispatched they discover what he’d been stashing away. They also discover that he’d been doing this for a very long time which was sapping their supplies very badly. How will a group that hasn’t discovered a sneaky sneaker react to all of this stashing away business they’ve suddenly uncovered? I think they might develop ideas as to what a sneaky sneaker is, or maybe they might think he’s not wrong to stash away extra supplies. I think what they’d do about one they did discover before being turned into a zombie would be similar, but then they’d have the added advantage of being able to question them. So they might turn a sneaky sneaker into an advantage, instead of a disadvantage, once discovered.

I don’t necessarily think they should be taken out, just controlled properly by whomever is the leader of the group. If done properly any type of person can be turned into an advantage. 😀

      • I think if they discovered Dead-Zed-Sneaky-Sneaker’s stash, 😀
They would go through EVERYTHING. Turn over everyone’s beds, check their packs, check the vents. No more privacy. Thanks, dead-zed-sneaky-sneaker. 🙁

Anyone can definitely be turned into an advantage. Especially if you need a distraction for the zeds! ;D

  6. You don’t need a zed takeover for today’s discussion question. Anytime you go to a new school or start a new job you have a group who have been together for a long time who have their norms and you have no support from friends or family.

You have to quickly decide how your going to interact with them and whether you are going to adopt their norms as your own and especially if those norms do not match your own moral values.

    • Yes! Great thought!
      🙂

  7. I’d say Barb is not playing it right… It’s way to early IMO to be suspicious about Clark, or at least way to early to show him she is suspicious… Maybe we should hurry and salvage what can be… Just saying.
