Zombie Cliche Lookout: Making Lemonade

They say that, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade – and don’t worry, I’ll work zombies into this. Of course, there are a lot of smart-ass retorts to this, but I think that it’s really a good philosophy. There are so many things in life that we simply cannot control. Some are positive, but many aren’t. How we deal with those negative chance elements reveals a lot about our character and our adaptability. A person who can use even the bad in life to further their own ends is likely to go a lot farther than someone who wallows in self-pity.

Naturally, this has applications to zombie survival. When a survivor is faced with hardship, they’re much more likely to overcome it if they can think creatively and use every advantage. Those who despair are lost.

About this Episode:

Brent has been a bit of a pain in the ass character since he was originally introduced, especially with his need to continue filming things when everyone else was desperately fighting the zombies. I liked that, but I also wanted him to be a little more nuanced than that. He shouldn’t just exist to cause other characters trouble. So, in his final hours, I want him to come across as a ultimately decent person, albeit one who had problems with getting caught up in the excitement of things and neglected his fellow man.

Discussion Question: New Year’s Resolution Check-In

Well, we’re a month into 2015, so I figured I’d check in with everyone and see how you’re doing on your resolutions. So, how’s it going?

I’ll play too. My resolution is to lose weight and get in shape for Tough Mudder in September. I’m happy to report that I’m doing okay. I’ve been working out six days a week and watching what I eat. I’ve lost about eight pounds so far, with two inches off my belly. I’m also able to do a few more push-ups and a lot more crunches. Not a bad start, although I still have a hell of a long way to go.

  1. No typos today, at least not that I could spot! 😀

    • Yay!

  2. I’d imagine Stewart’s retort will probably be tongue-in-cheek, unless he complains about having lost the remote for the channel selector! 😀

    • Hah, I could definitely see that.

  3. Also, why do I get the feeling Brent should’ve had this exact converstion – his side anyway – with Inez? 😉

    • *conversation – doh 😀

      • It could have done Inez a lot of good.

  4. I just thought of something Brent could’ve said if Dave was doing a 6-panel format: “Also, see if you can scrounge up some leftovers, I’m starving to death here!” 😀

    • I did add some hover text. Not exactly what you wrote, but kind of close.

  5. Hi Dave.. remember the other day I recommended the TV show Helix? Well.. I finished watching the first series over the week end… I’m afraid I must take what I said back.
This show is terrible. Or to be more specific, the first half was decent but midway through the first season things start to fall apart.. to the point that nothing makes sense anymore when you reach the season finale. My wife and I actually had some good laughs while these last episodes… so in a way it was not a complete waste of time but… good grief, it sucked so bad that it is embarrassing. I hear there is a second season that just got started.. It baffles me that they got the funding to carry on this nonsense.

Anyway… you’ll be warned… and if you happen to give it a try I would be happy to discuss it with you!

    • That is unfortunate. We watched the first two episodes this weekend, and were looking forward to the rest.

      • Well, well… maybe we could write a review together highlighting plot holes and contradictions… if you manage to watch it until the end!
As a compensation.. here is another show I can warmly recommend… “Broadchurch”. Nothing to do with Zombies or apocalyptic viruses, but it’s a hell of a good show.. a story that will stick with you long after you have finished watching the 8 episodes (also on Netflix).

        • A review would be awesome!

I’ll check out Broadchurch; that name sounds familiar.

  6. Them Feels :'(

    • Yes indeed.

  7. Hmm, my resolutions for this year… First; get back in shape, not physically but time-management-wise. I’m doing good, using a combination of Asian-efficiency and gtd in omnifocus and evernote. My shape is improving. Second; get a different dentist because I don’t trust the advice of my current one… I still have to make the call and finally, getting up earlier again; I’ll start tomorrow 🙂

“when life gives you lemons, make lemonade”, I wish I had that attitude… I try… but lemons are still too sour for my taste sometimes.

    • Man, I’m trying to get back into getting up early too. I used to get up every day at five. Not anymore.

      • Don’t sweat it Dave. I used to have the same problem. Now I get up at 6:00AM every weekday because if I don’t the kids don’t get their act together and get to school on time. Technically, getting the kids up and ready for school is my wifes job (since shes the stay-at-home mom) and since Im the one who works outside the home I can sleep in until 7. We made it 3 days before I was awakened by my wife’s sweet voice calling “Get your lazy ass out of bed and help me with YOUR children! SLeep in while you can brother….it don’t last.

        • Hah. Sounds like good advice.
