Zombie Cliche Lookout: Sneaking

They say discretion is the better part of valor, and I’d tend to agree in a lot of respects, especially when it comes to surviving the zombie apocalypse. Sure, it’s fun to see heroes in zombie flicks taking on a giant horde of zombies, but that hardly seems like a very workable survival plan. Knowing when to pick your battles, when to run, and when to sneak around is going to keep you alive a lot longer than just charging the horde like Xerxes at Thermopylae.

About this Episode:

I just love that paniced face in the forth panel. I’ve probably got a half-dozen of those heads, and it hardly seems like enough considering how frequently I use them. They’re great for fear, obviously, but I also like to toss them in for moments of surprise, anger, or just when someone is yelling and being obnoxious.

Related directly to the comic, I went back and forth on how to show Clark creeping up to the window. Originally, I had shots of him slowing getting closer, frame-to-frame, but it looked kind of weird to me. In the end, I think this looks better.

Other News:

Don’t forget, I’m going to be slowing responding to comments today since I’m out of town (but don’t hold up the discussion on my account). So play nice and I’ll talk to everyone on Tuesday.

Discussion Question: Zombie Senses

This one relates a lot to the episode. Just how do zombies find and track victims? What are their sensory capabilities? Do they rely primarily on sight, like the living? Or do other senses tend to take over? Should zombies develop senses in a way that the living do not or cannot? Do they have any sort of extra sense? And can we trick their senses, like they do in The Walking Dead?

  1. Pretty sure there’s a rifle in the other side of that window…

Zombies rely on three major senses. Hearing, smell, and sight. This can all be tricked in different ways, except for smell, not sure if you can trick that. Sight can be tricked with extreme light, sound with loud noises, and smell maybe like they did on TWD, but I’m not sure of how that would work out.

    • I’m kind of mixed on tricking zeds with smell too, but I think it’s a cool idea.

      • Well, I would argue that a zombie shouldn’t be any better at tracking by scent than a normal human, which is to say pretty damn bad. Even if you allow them the ability at all, it shouldn’t be useful to distinguish us from them. They used to be human, and a recently turned zombie should still smell human. Even arguing that there’s a special ‘Zombie smell’, you could fool that simply by pinching a zombie’s jacket.

  2. How much money did you spend on all of those lego pieces?

    • It’s hard to say. I’ve still got my collection from when I was a child, and I’ve been buying sets for years now. Probably a lot.

  3. No head shot huh? Well played Dave.. Well played.
    -Steps back into the shadows-

    • Hah. No head shot.

  4. On a random side note – Congratulations on making it to episode “half of the beast”!

    • Thank you Mark! That one didn’t even occur to me before you pointed it out.

  5. I think that the zeds would have all the senses that a human would have, but they would have to be still “there”. For example zed with no eyes couldn’t see you and the same with a zed with missing nose couldn’t smell you as well maybe.

    • That makes sense to me.

  6. I bet he saw darth vader in a tutu……

    • That would certainly be shocking.
