Zombie Cliché Lookout:
I zombie stories, being bitten is a death sentence. This is generally established pretty early on in the story, and the characters become acclimated to these rules very, very quickly. Regardless, when someone is bitten denial is usually their strongest feeling. Characters will tell themselves that, unlike all the other poor dumb bastards out there, somehow their bite is different. Somehow it’s more survivable, perhaps there wasn’t enough of a fluid exchange, or the bite wasn’t deep enough. Whatever it is, the tell themselves, their bite is different. This sense of denial can often act as a catalyst to push characters toward the next plot point, generally seeking medical attention of some sort.

  1. Hah, I couldn’t help but laugh at the, “You don’t think it’s too late, do you?” line! Jeff is definitely zombified. If he hadn’t talked in this episode, I would’ve thought he’d already turned.

I love this cliché, especially as it is demonstrated in Dead Snow (I think you’ve seen it, right?) In particular, I mean a certain set of scenes invovling a chainsaw after a zombie bite… 😉

    • I sure have. Pretty fun movie. Not one of the greats, but definitely worth a viewing or two.

  2. “I can quit desiring brains any time I want to!”
    “No one’s doubting you, Jeff…”
    “BRAINS!”

    • It’s sad, really. They usually start with the “gateway” organs, like the heart or liver… By the time they move on to brains, there’s no turning back.

      • This exchange made me smile.

      • As a personal ex brain addict, I can attest to that, Dude Person, except for a few select cases. Now I travel the country warning young zombies of the risks of these organs. I’m thinking of starting a support group, too.

        • Zombie Anonymous? Undead Anonymous? The possibilities are myriad.

        • Undead Anonymous sounds catchy. We’ll have to get some government funding, and support from Zombie sites like yours Dave.

Ever see those “Are drugs turning your child into a stranger?” commercials? Now, imagine the SAME thing with Zombies.
“Are organs turning YOUR little Zombie into a stranger? Get help from Undead Anonymous and Organ Free.”

        • I can see the meeting notice posters now… glorious!

        • I’m not sure if you guys have this (wherever you are) but when I listen to the radio, I always hear about “Over Eaters Anonymous.” How about “Brain – Eaters Anonymous?”

        • I can’t say I’ve heard that here (Metro Detroit), but then I don’t listen to a lot of radio. We do have a ton of Gambling Support stuff since there are ton of casinos in Michigan (three alone in Detroit with one more across the river in Windsor, ON).

        • Can I email you something Dave?

        • Sent.

        • “This is your brain on BRAAAAAINSS… any questions?”

        • Currently working on a stop-motion of that commercial called “Undead Anyamous commercial.” may not come out for a while…

      • God knows what Nocorette style products for zombies will spring up.

  3. nice dave but i think its to late for a nurse at east they didnt shoot him like they didd shannon the cold truth.

    • Sadly, it may indeed be too late.

  4. ”You don’t think it’s too late, do you?”
”No, not at all…” (says that with gun pointed at Jeff) *BLAM* 🙂

    • Hah, so dark!

      • Nah, you want to get him looking the other way first. Don’t make the poor bastard look down the barrel.
…I’m remembering reading “Of Mice and Men” in high school. Y’all read that one in HS in America?

  5. This bite has been taking some time….

  6. Oh so they’ve gone to the hospital to find somone to help Jeff,
Also Tyzan8 wanted a link or info on Dead Island Last page: Here is the trailer, you’ll probably find related videos with gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZqrG1bdGtg&ob=av3e

    • I forgot how incredible that trailer was. Thanks for posting it!

      • No problem, It’s probably the most moving and magical CGI video I’ve seen with zombies D:
Also shouldn’t they have checked the entire area was secure before sitting down on the sofa? That gun must’ve attracted some attention, of course Jeff would need to rest more in his current state…

        • Thanks Nerospike!
Wow amazing i need to find whart platforms this is on let’s hope Wii too!I am inspired i have abandoned my old script to work on a new one…I mean umm……..I don’t have a script…whatever.

        • Lol

      • @Dave The thing is I it’s amazing because somehow it makes you feel for the family. Y’know a sum up is: Family of Three go on holiday and get eated by zombies. We’ve seen that before…but it’s never made us feel like that… I think zombie film writers should focus on that family relationship.
Also a book for you to get Dave 😀 or at least to think about: Zombie Apocalypse – Stephen Jones. It’s a book made up of various accounts of emails, news broadcast transcripts, text messages, Twitter messages and more written by various authors. And read if from the start to finish, because the ending is damn well creepy…

        • They really wrench a lot of feeling from that video. The Memento-style adds a lot to that.

Sounds like an interesting book. I’m going to pop that on my wish list.

  7. I’m still hoping that somehow, someway, Jeff survives.

    • Glad to see some love for our intrepid news crew. They were never intended to be real characters, I just liked them so much I decided to expand their rolls.

  8. CHAINSAW…….

I am focusing on the CHAINSAW!!!!!

    • The one he casually tossed aside, presumably because he’s sickly and it’s gotten too heavy?

      • I look at it as the one that will be used because he got too sickly…..

        • ZombieMutts and Excitement: A Love Story!

        • The story fo ZOmbiemutts is an amzing one he was featured and over time he commented more and more then he sort of became a
co-worker on the site. That may be the best story I have ever told to the silent readers and the commenters.

  9. Well darn… all the “brrraaiinnnsss” jokes have been made. Wonder if they’ll find that one nurse from when it all started.

    • You never know. They are in her neck of the woods.

  10. Now what? Now what Ted?Now You guys need to go beat the crap out of some more zombies! You’re not going anywhere until you give those grey brain-eaters a helping of death!

(TEST LINE) wanted to see what that would do.

AnyZed (EPIC new word yay!) great episode Dave very gripping storyline here!

    • I can’t take credit for “zed”. I got it from Shaun of the Dead, and that just comes from the way British* people pronounce the letter Z.

*I’ve heard Canadians do the same.

      • I meant AnyZed is a new word feel free to use that anywhere all you zombie fans!

      • It’s slowly fading in Canada – there’s only so many times you can hear the Alphabet Song on American “Sesame Street” feeds and not have “ZEEEE” stuck in the noggin, too.

Still, it’s worth trying for. I’ve been forcing it into my readings to my kids.

        • That’s a shame. I’ve always liked the “Zed’ thing. Damn monoculture.

        • Hm… now I have an idea for a AV Club name, though!

        • Outstanding. I really need to start commenting on there, but I fear it would take over far too much of my time.

        • Eh, not terribly much – it’s mostly the reading (and the desire to move away from my regular name). I’ve now got “Jay-Zed” as a moniker.

        • It seems to be going strong where I live.

        • Where’s that, SWAT?

        • Moncton, NB.

        • As a UK resident, I have a mixed experience with the whole zed/zee thing. Calling zombies “Zees” just doesn’t feel the same as “Zeds” (Not that I actually use either, I don’t have a problem with “the zed word”)
On the other hand, “Ell-Zed” doesn’t sound right compared to “Ell-Zee”. Maybe Commonwealth soldiers use a different term, because I don’t think I’ve ever heard that one with our pronunciation.

  11. BREAKING NEWS GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!LEGO HAS SENT ME AN EMAIL NOTIFYING ME OF THEY’RE NEW MINIFIGURE LINE!!!IT’S THE MOST WANTED OF SERIES 1-3!!!!!!!!!!!!!Whew sorry for going into an all caps rage there but I am EXCITED!!!!

    • That’s a lot of exclamation points you got there, Tyzan. Care to paste the email here?

      • I’m not sure if this can be confirmed., I haven’t gotten an email, and I am signed up to get them.

    • “IT’S THE MOST WANTED OF SERIES 1-3”

          Dear Loretta,

Simply click on their preferred minifigure below to register your vote. We will then turn the most popular characters into an exclusive LEGO Minifigure set, only available to LEGO VIPs!* Choose wisely, you only get to vote once! Voting closes July 30.

*Voting closes on 30 July 2011 and is restricted to one vote per registered VIP Member. The top 5 minifigures will be announced in the November email newsletter and the set will be exclusively available to VIP Members to purchase in 2012, and at this time terms will be announced. The sets will be available for as long as supplies last. Please be aware that while every best effort will be made to exactly replicate the minifigures from the series range, if the winning minifigures contain parts no longer in production, we will look to find the closest looking pieces as a replacement part, and if no suitable replacement parts are readily available, we will substitute the minifigure(s) in question with runners-up.

hope this works if not sorry for failing 🙁

        • Hmm, very interesting. If it goes by voting I’m sure the zombie will be up there since – I believe – it’s the most expensive fig on BrickLink.

Sounds like the results will be revealed in November.

        • ” it’s the most expensive fig on BrickLink.”

I can assure you it is……

        • Um, not the most expensive… I’m sure there’s something out there that tops this: http://www.bricklink.com/search.asp?itemID=9473

I assume you meant “most expensive of the collectible minifigs.”

        • Holy crow, Lich, that’s insane.

        • Yup. So tempting sometimes… it’s not like the guy was even good enough to deal with Mace Windu, after all.

        • Hah, very true, Lich.

Fortunately, I, being a Star Wars fan myself, picked up an AOTC Slave I (Jango Fett’s ship) set on eBay a few years ago, when they were more available/affordable.

Heh, if I ever need extra cash, I know where to find it now! (Although I do rather like the Jango minifig… one of my favorites, for some reason, don’t know why.)

      • Dont worry mutts I was planning on cremating you so I could be daves favorite.Whoops said that out loud.

        • Hah….awesome.

    • Tyzan…please forward that email to [email protected] please. Thanks my friend.

      • Done.go ahead and check it out zombiemutts!

        • Thanks my friend…interesting! Zombie will have to be on there. Glad my VIP card is overlowing with points!

        • “This email was sent to ADDRESS REMOVED BY DAVE”

So is that: [email protected]? 😀

        • Hah, I didn’t want Tyzan’s mom to get spammed.

        • Oh she has over 7000 emails she can’t get anymore.I’ll directly forward anything i need to send you or at least remove forwarding text.
IMPORTANT NOTE YOU MUST BECOME A LEGO VIP TO OBTAIN THIS MINIFIGURE SET!!!!just a warning…

  14. There’s a cure for Jef’s condition, unfortunately it involves killing him, eventually. 😀 I’ll probably post more about this tomorrow, when I get the PC back from it’s virus-enforced trip to the computer technician! 🙂

    • Well, tomorrow became the day after next, so here I am! 😀 I think Jeff there will eventually turn into a zombie, or maybe he’ll become a zombie like Wash did in Brick House, one that can talk and maybe even think or something like that! 😉 I’m waiting to see where Dave takes the storyline with Jeff here! 😀

      • Hah, for some reason, I can’t see Dave using talking, thinking zombies in his story. 😉

        • Yeah, that’s probably not going to happen.

  15. Dave what’s your favorite zombie movies beside the horde it sucked in my opion.

    • Oh La Horde is by no means a favorite, I just liked it. My favorites off the top of my head would be:
Night of the Living Dead (original and the 1990 remake)
Dawn of the Dead (original and 2004 remake)
Day of the Dead (avoid the sequels and remake at all costs)
      Zombi/Zombi 2
28 Days Later (and 28 Weeks to a lesser extent)
      Shaun of the Dead
      Rec

      • I haven’t watched Rec yet but it’s recorded on Sky+ Is it any good then?

        • I enjoyed it quite a bit. Have you already seen Quarentine (the US remake)? It follows the plot extremely closely.

  16. Wishful thinking can be more dangerous then zombies.
