Zombie Creation: The Call of Cthulhu

There’s a lot of zombie stuff out there, and most of it is crap. People like to jump on bandwagons and produce quick tie-ins rather than investing love and effort into their creations. Luckily for you, I’m here to help separate the wheat from the chaff. Check back every Thursday, when I’m going to share the coolest zombie-related creation I can find out there on the web.

This weeks creation is called “The Call of Cthulhu” by ((Primus)). What in the world does this have to do with Zombies you might say? Well, indirectly, almost everything. Created by H.P Lovecraft, Cthulhu is the most prominent monsters in the Cthulhu Mythos which is an open ended fictional world that is open to every writer to explore and write in. From legends like Stephen King to rising stars like Rod Redux, H.P Lovecraft was a heavy influence on all of them and most horror might not exist today were it not for Lovecraft.

While this particular scene does not appear in any specif story of Lovecraft’s, you easily get the idea that Cthulhu is a creature hell bent on destruction for a grand apocalypse. If you look close enough you’ll realize this is an underwater scene that and you might even spot a couple stingray’s swimming by.

Outstanding mixture of traditional LEGO® and the much maligned (to the LEGO® purists) Bionacle pieces. The scale is flat out impressive and I am loving how how Cthulhu was squeezed into a futuristic set of body armor.

There is no detail left unconsidered and he even used clear pieces to represent floating in water. The dark LEGO® fits the mood of Cthulhu himself highlighted by the neon green eyes.

Again, yeah this isn’t about zombies but its an important part of horror history that captured the imagination of many writers whose work we enjoy today.

Have you seen a great zombie creation out on the web? Are you working on the next great zombie MOC as we speak? Well you had better let us know right away, otherwise we’ll never be able to include it here.

  1. Wait are we seeing the wrong pic? I looked at Flickr and it was different.

    • I fixed it. Sorry about that, my fault.

I switched up which Cthulhu MOC I was going to use a few times and I don’t think I made it clear to Dave which one I settled on.

      • I was having a hard time spotting that damn sting ray.

        • Well I appreciate the trust even though you didn’t see it! hahah

        • Hah. I figured, “If he said it’s there, it’s there.”

        • Thanks buddy!

          That’s hilarious…..hahahahah

        • Yeah me to Dave.

  2. ALL PRAISE CTHULHU!

    • I’ll take that as approval!

    • Thanks for the link. I hate to admit it but I have never read an HP Lovecraft book. Any suggestions on which would be a good starter book?

This is an awesome build by the way. Even though I have no idea who Cthulhu is, this is way bad ass!

Oh and how do you pronounce that? lol

      • Angelina…check your email in a bit. In fact if anyone wants a free LEGAL collection of Lovecrafts work, send me an email. [email protected]

You’ve seen some of the more classic pictures of him. In hindsight I’m regretting not using a more traditional image of cthulhu for this week’s creation.

Here is how you pronounce it …although when me and my dorky friends played Dungeons and Dragon’s we pronounced it cha-tooloo.

And here is a wonderful song about him

Ever seen the movie Cloverfield? Its basically a modernized Cthulhu.

        • Ok…I am pushing myself into insanity.

Apparently there is a Southpark song about the Dark One.

      • Lovecraft’s stories can be a little dense, Angelina, but I’ve always found some of his longer ones to be more readable, maybe because the length thins them out a bit.

“The Call of Cthulhu” is a mystery/ investigation story.

“At The Mountains of Madness” is about a polar expedition that makes some amazing discoveries in the ice.

“The Shadow Over Innsmouth” is sort of a creepy-old-house mystery, except it’s an entire town.

        • I go through phases of liking his work and having high interest. My first phase was when I was an AD&D dork (2nd ed please).

Overall I think I’m more interested in Lovecraft himself right now.

“dense” is a good word to describe his writing.

  4. This is really quite fitting given that Lovecraft was the first author to feature flesh eating undead in his Herbert West: Re-Animator serial. While no one has proven a direct link between HPL’s story and Russo/Romero’s script for Night, the fact remains that Lovecraft beat anyone else to this particular innovation.

Great build of a non-traditional (yet awesome) Cthulhu!

    • Reaaaaaaaaly……

Interesting I’m going to go read that ASAP. Thanks for sharing that!
